Bark beetles aren’t all the same.
Ips (engraver) beetles often attack ponderosa pine and kill trees from the top down.
Mountain pine beetles leave pitch tubes and boring dust near the base.
Identifying other species may require cutting into the tree to look at the gallery patterns they create while feeding and developing.
Understanding these differences helps Forest Service scientists monitor forest health and respond more effectively. Learn more about forest health: https://www.fs.usda.gov/science-technology/forest-health
