The Salmon-Challis National Forest, in partnership with the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation and Idaho Trails Association , hosted a volunteer trail maintenance event on the Langer Lake Trail, 4014, on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 6.

Four volunteers and a Salmon-Challis National Forest employee worked to clear 25 trees off the trail and clean 34 waterbars to snow line on the first 1.6 miles of the trail. The crew was in good spirits as they enjoyed the good weather and views and were proud to improve access to a popular trail into the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness.

If you’re interested in more volunteer trailwork opportunities in the Frank Church, contact Eric Giebelstein, [email protected] for more information. Huge thanks to the 43 crew members and volunteers from Student Conservation Association, Challis Community Trails, U.S. Forest Service-Sawtooth National Forest Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Salmon-Challis National Forest, and other volunteers for their incredible work on the Potato Mountain loop at the end of May!

Teams completed 3.25 miles of trail improvements on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

Crews split into two groups to clear downed trees, remove hazard trees, install water diversions, improve tread, and upgrade a trailhead parking area. This work keeps one of the area’s most popular riding routes safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Trail work continued later in the week with support from Idaho Parks and Recreation. Additional maintenance is planned June 8–11, with another 16+ miles of work coordinated between the Salmon-Challis, the Sawtooth NRA, and Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.

Thank you to everyone helping keep our trails in great shape!

Although National Trails Day was last weekend, everyday is trails day at SBFC!

Did you know that our crews typically work an 8-day hitch schedule? They spend that entire time immersed in wilderness, working hard on the trail.
At any given time, we’ll have up to 10 different projects going on, with crews working 10+ different trails.

There’s a lot of ground to cover in the Selway, the Frank, and the surrounding wildlands, but we are making progress!

This hitch, we are working on the following trails:
- #4114 East Mayfield (SCNF)
- #215 Crooked Creek (NPCNF)
- #4 Selway River/ #520 Eagle Rock (NPCNF)
- #11 Big Creek (BNF)
- #606 62 Ridge (NPCNF)
- #4101 Loon Creek (SCNF)
- #024 Flossie Lake(PNF)
- #4014 Langer Lake (SCNF)
