Salt Lake City does the same thing to its poverty-stricken populations. We have long said drugs have their use for the unsheltered, and this woman’s comment that methamphetamines keep you awake so you’re not robbed, graped, violated is a common sentiment we hear on our streets.

Today!

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 29, Crossroads Urban Center will be holding its annual poverty summit at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, beginning at 9:00 AM.

This morning I realized that I may not have done the best job explaining with the topics being discussed at the summit are so important.

Since work requirements were expanded for SNAP at the end of last year there have been thousands of people in Utah who have lost nutrition assistance benefits. Many of those people are still eligible for benefits but struggled to complete all of the new paperwork that came with these new rules. In January, similar rules will be added to Medicaid. That is why we are having a panel discussion about these rules and what we as a community can do to help eligible low income families continue to get help buying food and receiving basic healthcare.

Our other panel discussion is about major new initiatives that potentially will permanently alter how people with serious mental illness intersect with the courts and the homeless services system. To be honest, I really do not fully understand all of the changes that are underway and so I assume most people reading this email also will learn a lot from this presentation

We also will be presenting Hellraiser awards to Deeda Seed for the work she did to build a coalition to oppose the creation of a giant detention center for homeless people on wetlands near the Salt Lake City Airport and to two Jerry Schmidt for the many hours he devoted to mobile people to oppose the elimination of a property tax relief program for low income seniors.

Why can’t we do this?

Under the new program, homeowners and churches would be allowed to host vehicles for temporary housing.

We have been through our own personal hell criticizing the Other Side Academy and Village / Corporation / Foundation on our platforms.

But we stand for the people.

We will not back down.

So happy to see the isn’t either.

Accountability goes both ways. Criticism is there to help us grow. You can’t preach accountability without being willing to be accountable yourself.

Let us reiterate, is tens of millions of taxpayer dollars spent on housing 22 (at last announcement, it may be 30, even 40 now) unsheltered folks in tiny homes a good use of our money? When so many others leave traumatized and worse off than before their programs?

When only 200 people graduate from the Other Side Academy programs over ten years, is this the panacea for recovery, deserving all the money, attention and to be lauded as THE SOLUTION so fervently?

In 2008, Finland abandoned traditional temporary shelter networks and adopted a revolutionary social model known as "Housing First." Under this approach, unhoused individuals are immediately provided with permanent rental apartments and secure housing contracts without requiring them to complete sobriety programs or secure employment beforehand.

Once individuals have a safe, permanent roof over their heads, social workers and healthcare staff provide tailored ongoing support to help them stabilize their lives. The strategy turned Finland into a global pioneer where long-term homelessness falls consistently year after year, demonstrating that securing stable housing first provides the necessary foundation for personal recovery and long-term stability.

Inspired by the “Miami model” in Florida — where Miami-Dade County has been diverting nonviolent people with mental illness away from jails and into mental health facilities — Utah state, city and county leaders are taking the next steps to put a plan into action.

Did you know for the last THREE MONTHS a homeless resource officer part of a Police Department in a city in Salt Lake County has been distributing our ID vouchers on the spot to unsheltered folks he encounters on his rounds?!? 😱❤️🙌🏽

His superiors haven’t given us permission to publicize his valuable work hence we’ve removed all identifiable characteristics from this photo.

But this is HUGE!

For someone living on the streets, an ID can mean the difference between being locked out of society and having a path back in. An ID is needed to apply for housing, get a job, access benefits, open a bank account, receive medical care, enter treatment, and replace other vital documents. Yet obtaining one without an address, transportation, money, or supporting paperwork can be incredibly difficult.

By carrying Nomad Alliance ID vouchers and distributing them directly during his rounds, this officer is removing one of those barriers on the spot. What may seem like a simple voucher can become the first step toward housing, employment, recovery, stability, and ultimately a life off the streets.

Now let’s see if other PDs in Salt Lake County see this officer’s incredible example and facilitate their homeless resources officers to follow suit! We can only hope!
