One of my favorite residents growing up in my parent's assisted living communities played lead rhythm guitar for Elvis Presley.

His name was John. He joined us at our family's Alta Ridge assisted living community in Salt Lake City to recover from surgery. My dad is a lifelong Elvis fan, so John was welcomed like royalty.

He looked exactly fifty percent Vietnam veteran and fifty percent Elvis — signature glasses, classic sideburns, a lightning-bolt TCB necklace given to him personally by Elvis.

One afternoon we were sitting on the front porch while he smoked his Pall Mall ci******es. I mentioned a storm was rolling in.

He looked at me and said: "Jason, Mother Nature is a fickle bitch."

I've never forgotten it.

The best story he ever told me was about the night Elvis woke up a car dealership owner at 2am to buy a fleet of trucks, then called the local sports outfitter for football helmets and pads. According to John, the band played demolition derby on the front lawn of Graceland until dawn. The trucks were repaired and donated to local farmers by morning.

John died in 2013. He and his wife Terry became lifelong friends of our family.

I share this because it's a reminder of something I've believed my entire career: the elderly are not waiting rooms for death. They are extraordinary people in the final chapters of extraordinary lives.

When I help a family find a senior care community today, I'm not just thinking about care plans and square footage. I'm thinking about who that person IS — their humor, their history, the things that make them feel like themselves.

That's what a good community protects.
