Today, the Utah Consular Corps (UCC) celebrated two major milestones: our 25th anniversary and the grand opening of our brand-new office!

We were deeply honored to receive an official proclamation from Governor , declaring March 18, 2026, as Utah Consular Corps Day. This recognition underscores Utah’s commitment to international partnership and cultural exchange.
Special thanks to the representative of the Lieutenant Governor and Senator for their inspiring remarks and support of our mission.

Our most sincere and heartfelt gratitude goes to David Murell, Honorary Consul of Luxembourg. His incredible generosity in providing our new office space ensures that the UCC has a dedicated home to continue fostering global connections for years to come.

25 Years. Dozens of Nations. One Utah. 🤝

As we enter 2026, the Utah Consular Corps is proud to celebrate our Silver Anniversary. For 25 years, our mission has been to facilitate the relationships that allow Utah to thrive in a global economy and a multicultural world.

It’s a big year for the nation as it hits the 250-year mark, and while we’ve got a little catching up to do in the longevity department, we’re proud of the outsized impact we’ve made in just a quarter-century.

Join us throughout the year as we reflect on our history and look toward a future of continued international cooperation.

Update: Jani Iwamoto Represents Utah at Japanese Embassy Reception 🇯🇵🤝🇺🇸

Recently, the Japanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. hosted a gathering of Honorary Consuls and Consul Generals followed by a reception at the Ambassador’s residence. We’re proud that our Honorary Consul of Japan, Jani Iwamoto, represented Utah and strengthened the ties between our state and Japan.

Why this matters: Japan is a key economic partner for Utah, dozens of Japanese firms call Utah home (28 companies reported as of Jan 2024), and Utah regularly exports hundreds of millions of dollars in goods and services to Japan.

Utah leaders have been actively deepening those links: Governor Cox led a trade mission to Japan in 2024 to promote collaboration across aerospace, life sciences, fintech, advanced manufacturing and tech-sectors where Japanese investment and Utah innovation are a great match.

“I pointed at myself, mouthing the words ‘eu?!’ (me?).”

When Luis Câmara Manoel was unexpectedly named by the President of Portugal as the first Honorary Consul to Utah, he didn’t just accept a title—he accepted a mission to make a “dispersed” community feel seen.

From organizing the state’s first consular visits to overseeing the surge of over 3,000 students in Portuguese immersion programs, Câmara Manoel is bridging the gap between Lisbon and Salt Lake City.

As Vice President of the Utah Consular Corps, he’s now helping redefine Utah as a rising hub for international diplomacy.

On December 3rd, the Utah Consular Corps in partnership with the Utah Legislature — hosted our 3rd Annual Utah Diplomatic Gala, an evening celebrating diplomacy, public service, and global friendship.

In a heartfelt tribute we posthumously presented the inaugural Utah Consular Corps Distinguished Service Award to The Honorable George S. Simon, Consul of Hungary, who passed away earlier this year. Consul Simon’s lifelong commitment to diplomacy and service leaves a lasting legacy that inspired everyone in attendance.

We were proud to recognize Iain McKay and the late George Simon for their many years of dedicated diplomatic and consular service, and to honor The Stirling Foundation for its extraordinary work enriching lives around the world.

Thank you to our partners, honorees, and everyone who joined us for a night of remembrance, gratitude, and renewed commitment to international engagement.

🌟 Member Spotlight: Meet Jonathon Tichy, President of the Utah Consular Corps! 🌟

Did you know our very own UCC President is a global diplomacy powerhouse? 🇨🇿 Accredited as Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Salt Lake City since 2009, Jonathon was installed in a ceremony at the Utah State Capitol in 2010.

As President of Envoy Legal & Consulting International, he specializes in international legal and governmental relations. He’s also counsel to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and an adjunct professor at BYU! 📚⚖️

Jonathon’s adventures? He’s met hundreds of world leaders, including over two dozen presidents and prime ministers. Fluent in Czech, Slovak (native-level), and even conversational Hawaiian! 🌺 He’s lived abroad for 7+ years in business, legal, and governmental roles.

Flashback to the ‘90s: Appointed by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. Embassy in Prague, he worked closely with Secretary Madeleine Albright on official visits—and earned the State Department’s Meritorious Honor Medal for his stellar work! 🏅

Awards keep coming: 2011 BYU Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Former Exec VP of Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, and now on boards like Salt Lake Film Society, Wallace Toronto Foundation, Global Slovakia, and Czech & Slovak School of Utah.

Meet Jonathan Freedman, entrepreneur, diplomat, and a powerhouse for Utah’s global connections. 🇺🇦🌎

A few reasons we’re proud to highlight Jonathan:

- He was recognized as Honorary Consul of Ukraine (officially opening the consulate in 2008), a role born from deep personal ties to the country after serving a mission there in the 1990s.

- Jonathan co-founded Downeast Outfitters, growing the brand into a major regional retailer, a true founder’s story of grit and growth.

- Today he leads Utah’s international business efforts as President & CEO of World Trade Center Utah, helping local companies reach the world.

- He’s also a civic leader and arts supporter, serving on the Utah Museum of Fine Arts board and other local institutions, and a longtime friend to the Ukrainian community in Utah.

Join us in celebrating Jonathan’s work building bridges between Utah and the world, from entrepreneurship to diplomacy to community service. 👏
