Jordan River Commission

Jordan River Commission The Jordan River Commission was formed by an interlocal cooperation agreement in August 2010.

An interlocal agency that facilitates regional cooperation to implement the Blueprint Jordan River, provides a forum for coordination of recreation, restoration, and responsible development, and serves as a technical resource to riverfront communities. The Commission was created to bring together cities, counties, state and federal agencies that have jurisdiction of the Jordan River, and other par

tners and stakeholders, to implement the projects, programs and partnerships outlined in the Blueprint Jordan River (http://jordanrivercommission.com/vision/). The Commission serves as a technical resource to riverfront communities, fosters outdoor recreation and ecological services that the Jordan River Parkway offers, provides a forum for regional coordination and cooperation, and promotes best practices for conservation, restoration, urban ecological planning and responsible development along the river corridor.

✅ Choose native, drought-friendly plants 🌱
✅ Use compost for natural nutrients 🍂
✅ Apply fertilizer sparingly & only when needed

We are talking about water safety this June! 💧☀️

Summer has begun, which means it’s the perfect time to recognize and become familiar with important water safety tips that can help keep everyone safe around the water.

Water Safety Tip #1: Don’t swim by yourself. No matter how experienced or confident you are as a swimmer, having a buddy nearby increases safety and ensures someone is there to assist if needed. Swimming with a friend can make all the difference during an unexpected situation.

Each week, we’ll continue sharing more information about important water safety tips and ways to help protect yourself, your family, and your community.

Have a great and SAFE summer! 💙

Trail Thursday 🗑

Leave No Trace starts with the small choices we make on the trail. Whether you’re walking, biking, birdwatching, or exploring with your dog, helping protect the Jordan River means packing out everything you bring in, including bagged pet waste.

Leaving pet waste behind can pollute waterways, harm wildlife, and impact the health of the river ecosystem. Even biodegradable bags take time to break down and don’t belong on the trail. By staying on designated paths, respecting wildlife, and cleaning up after ourselves, we can help keep the Jordan River a healthier and more enjoyable space for everyone!

Wild Wednesdays:🐤American White Pelican🐤
(Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)

American white pelicans are some of the largest in North America, with wingspans reaching up to 9 feet. During breeding season, they grow a unique flat “horn” on the top of their beak that falls off after mating and laying eggs.

The Jordan River provides an important habitat and migration stop for wildlife throughout the Salt Lake Valley, showing how valuable healthy urban waterways are for both people and nature.

👀Where to spot them: Pelicans can often be spotted in Utah during the warmer months, especially in spring and summer near wetlands, lakes, and slower sections of the Jordan River. Keep an eye out near bridges, ponds, and open water areas where they gather to rest and feed.

It’s June which means it’s time for the annual Lake to Lake Paddle Series with the Jordan River Commission. Over the next month and a half, we will be paddling a different section of the river each week as part of our annual reconnaissance of the River corridor. We invite the public to join us! Come to one or all of the paddles. This is a rigorous paddle series, which requires participants to have experience and their own boat and safely equipment to participate.
With lower water levels this spring we have opted to walk instead of paddle Week 2. Head to our website to learn more about each week and to sign up.

✨Blueprint Jordan River Mondays
The Blueprint Jordan River is our shared vision and action plan for a healthier, more welcoming river corridor. It guides work across seven focus areas like water health, recreation, safety, and community engagement to help connect people to the Jordan River in meaningful ways.

💙Focus Area of the Week - Active Transportation & Access
Goal 1.2 - Increase Trailhead Visibility to Promote Active Transportation for Everyday Activities

Goal 1.2 focuses on making the Jordan River Parkway easier to access by improving trailhead visibility and wayfinding. Many trailheads are hard to find or poorly marked, which limits access for commuting, recreation, and everyday use.

Key strategies include clearer signage, better mapping on apps like Google Maps and Apple Maps, improved information on hours and amenities, and upgraded trailhead facilities like lighting, restrooms, and parking. Expanding EV charging and placing trailheads near transit and community hubs also helps support more sustainable travel along the corridor.
