Air National Guard emergency management Airmen trained through Exercise Serow Samurai at Misawa Air Base, Japan, strengthening chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear response capabilities in a realistic Indo-Pacific training environment.

The seven-day deployment for training brought Airmen from Utah, Minnesota, Ohio and California together to practice command and control, reconnaissance and surveillance, munitions sampling, decontamination and field reporting. The exercise tested how emergency management teams communicate under pressure, use new response technologies and integrate with an active-duty installation during a simulated CBRN incident.

Training like this helps Airmen build confidence, sharpen technical skills and prepare for the complex conditions they may face during real-world response operations.

Emergency management Airmen from five Air National Guard units completed Exercise Serow Samurai, a seven-day deployment for training at Misawa Air Base, Japan, focused on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear response capabilities, command and control, field reconnaissance, munitions sampling and decontamination operations.

Airmen from the 151st Wing, Utah Air National Guard; 133rd Airlift Wing, Minnesota Air National Guard; 179th Cyberspace Wing, Ohio Air National Guard; 121st Air Refueling Wing, Ohio Air National Guard; and 163rd Civil Engineer Squadron, California Air National Guard, participated in the training. The exercise brought emergency management professionals together to test updated procedures, use emerging response technologies and strengthen relationships with one another and the active-duty force at Misawa.

The training culminated in a 28-hour continuous-operations capstone exercise built around a simulated CBRN incident near a critical flightline facility. In the scenario, base defense forces reported a small drone crash involving an unexploded improvised munition leaking an unknown liquid and emitting a suspicious v***r. The Emergency Operations Center activated the CBRN Control Center to assess the threat, build a common operating picture, run hazard models and deploy a four-person response team to investigate, collect samples and identify the notional hazard.

More than a parade, it was a chance to connect with the communities we serve and showcase the people, equipment, and capabilities that keep Utah ready.

On July 4, 1776, a new nation declared its independence, beginning a story of service, sacrifice, and civic responsibility that would shape generations. Two hundred and fifty years later, the Utah National Guard honored that legacy with the communities it serves.

From rodeo grounds and parade routes to stadium crowds and skies over Utah, Utah National Guard soldiers and airmen helped communities across the state mark America’s 250th Independence Day.

Utah National Guard soldiers and airmen supported events in the days leading up to and on July 4, including the Freedom 250 statewide flyover, city parades in Provo and West Jordan, Stadium of Fire, the Oakley Rodeo and other local celebrations.

In the air, the Utah National Guard supported Freedom 250 flyover events across the state. The Utah Air National Guard’s 151st Wing participated with a KC-135 Stratotanker, while Utah Army National Guard helicopters also took part in aerial support for Independence Day celebrations. Together, the aircraft represented the Guard’s joint capabilities and readiness for state and federal missions.

At the Oakley Rodeo, members of the 2-211th Aviation Battalion flew over the grounds as families gathered to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. The flyover brought Utah Army National Guard aviation into one of the state’s long-standing traditions and served as a visible reminder of the Guard’s presence.

In Provo, Utah National Guard members supported America’s Freedom Festival events, including the Grand Parade and Stadium of Fire. Soldiers, airmen, and members of the Utah National Guard Army Band participated in the parade, while soldiers with Charlie Battery, 145th Field Artillery Brigade, drove an M109 howitzer through downtown Provo.

The parade gave community members a chance to meet Guard members, see military equipment up close, and connect with the people who serve their state and nation. It also reflected Freedom 250 themes of honoring the nation’s past, celebrating the present, and inspiring future generations.

Happy Independence Day, Utah.

We wish we could have flown over every inch of the state today, but since we couldn’t, here are a few views from the amazing places we were able to pass by.

From inside the KC-135 Stratotanker, our crew had a front-row seat to the celebration below while supporting today’s flyovers from above. After the 419th Fighter Wing F-35s completed their first flyover pass, our crew refueled them before they headed out for their second pass.

It was an incredible way to celebrate our nation’s independence and the state we’re proud to serve.
