Today we celebrate Flag Day and honor the symbol that has united generations of Americans through times of challenge, sacrifice, and triumph.

For nearly 250 years, the Stars and Stripes have represented the ideals of freedom, courage, and service. It has flown over battlefields, communities, and homes across our nation, serving as a reminder of those who have stepped forward to defend it.

Every day, Soldiers and Airmen of the Utah National Guard stand ready to answer that call. Whether supporting our communities here at home or serving around the world, we remain committed to protecting the freedoms our flag represents.

This Flag Day, we honor our nation's flag, the citizens it represents, and all who have served beneath it.

Flames rose from a simulated aircraft wreckage site as emergency vehicles converged from every direction. Nearby, volunteer victims waited for treatment, firefighters coordinated rescue efforts, and emergency managers tracked the situation from the Emergency Operations Center.

The Utah Air National Guard joined local, state, and federal partners May 28 during Exercise Green Thunder 2026, a full-scale mass-casualty exercise at Salt Lake City International Airport designed to strengthen regional emergency response coordination and readiness.

The exercise simulated a catastrophic aircraft crash involving civilian and military passengers, requiring responders to manage fire suppression, casualty care, security operations, emergency communications, public information, and command-and-control functions.

Airmen from across the Utah Air National Guard took part in fire emergency services, medical response, security forces, emergency management, and public affairs operations. The exercise also activated emergency operations personnel, allowing agencies to practice information sharing and decision-making during a complex incident.

"Exercises like this give us the opportunity to train alongside the partners we would work with during a real-world emergency," said Col. Jeffrey Gould, 151st Wing commander. "Building those relationships before a crisis occurs improves our ability to respond quickly and effectively when lives are on the line."

Members of the 151st Wing Staff, the Comptroller Squadron pictured, participated in a Standard Readiness Review during the June Unit Training Assembly weekend, reinforcing the wing’s commitment to military standards, accountability, and mission readiness.

The review included an assessment of individual readiness requirements, training compliance, and a formal uniform inspection conducted by wing leadership. The effort is part of a broader initiative to strengthen a culture of daily readiness and ensure Airmen remain prepared to execute state and federal missions whenever called.

Throughout the review, Airmen demonstrated professionalism, attention to detail and dedication to maintaining the standards expected of the U.S. Air Force. Leaders also used the opportunity to provide feedback, identify areas for improvement and recognize members who exemplified military excellence.
The Standard Readiness Review serves as a tool to help ensure personnel are ready, resilient, and capable of supporting the 151st Wing’s mission at home and abroad.

Readiness is more than a requirement; it is a daily commitment that enables the wing to respond whenever Utah and the nation need us.
