On August 14, 2026, Deputy Lafferty, Deputy Salyer, Deputy Risner, and Deputy Bailey served multiple arrest warrants on a male individual at a residence on South River Road.

During the investigation, deputies also located and seized methamphetamine from the residence.

The individual was taken into custody and transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.

The Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to removing illegal drugs from our communities and holding those involved accountable.

🚨 PSA: If the Sheriff’s Office knocks on your door, pretending you’re not home usually isn’t the winning strategy.

Sheriff Bill Meade, Deputy Eugene Salyer, Deputy Neal Watson, and Deputy Tyler Lafferty attempted to make contact with three individuals at a residence on Elk Creek. Two of the occupants were wanted on Johnson County indictment warrants, but no one seemed interested in answering the door.

After approximately two hours and the ex*****on of a search warrant, deputies made entry into the residence. All three occupants were taken into custody without further incident. During the search, methamphetamine was also located and seized from inside the residence.

Outstanding teamwork by everyone involved. As always, we appreciate the support of the citizens of Magoffin County.

And remember… answering the door is almost always the faster option. It saves everyone a little time and a whole lot of paperwork.

Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office K9 Nitra has received donation of body armor

Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office, KY - K9 Nitra has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Nitra’s vest was sponsored by Paula Jacobi Richard of St. Augustine, FL and embroidered with the sentiment “In honor of CSPD K9 Roam”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,603 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office

On July 16, 2026, while on patrol, Deputy Tyler Lafferty observed a female subject slumped over in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked at the BP on the Mountain Parkway. After making contact, it took several verbal attempts before the subject woke up.

During the investigation, the subject admitted to being under the influence of Subutex and Klonopin. A search of her purse resulted in the recovery of several straws, one loaded syringe, and one Klonopin pill. The subject was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.

The Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to addressing illegal drug activity and protecting the citizens of our community. We appreciate the continued support of our residents as we work together to keep Magoffin County safe.

On July 15, 2026, Deputy Tyler Lafferty with the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint of a male subject attempting to break into several apartments and a residence on Allen Drive.

While en route, Deputy Lafferty observed the male subject walking on the sidewalk in front of Walgreens on Parkway Drive in Salyersville. Deputy Lafferty turned his patrol vehicle around, activated his emergency equipment, and attempted to make contact with the individual.

The male subject immediately became combative and refused to comply with multiple lawful verbal commands to get on the ground and place his hands behind his back. Instead, he balled his fists and charged at Deputy Lafferty, leading to a physical altercation in the middle of Parkway Drive.

During the struggle, Deputy Lafferty deployed his Taser, but it proved ineffective. The male subject then fled on foot down Parkway Drive. Deputy Lafferty pursued the suspect and was ultimately able to take him into custody after another physical struggle.

The investigation revealed the male subject was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the incident.

The suspect was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center on multiple charges. We are thankful that no innocent bystanders were injured during this incident, and we appreciate the assistance of everyone involved.

The Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting our community and will continue to respond swiftly to criminal activity while working to keep our citizens safe.

On May 26, 2026, Deputy Tyler Lafferty, Deputy Conner Risner, and Deputy Neil Watson responded to a possible domestic violence complaint after a 911 hang up call from a residence on Ed Hensley Road in Magoffin County.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with a male subject standing outside beside his truck. The male stated that he was the 911 caller and advised that he and his girlfriend had become involved in a verbal altercation that eventually turned physical. The male subject stated that the female had struck him several times in the face and chest area. Deputies observed visible markings on his face and chest which corroborated his statement.

Deputies then made contact with the female subject, who stated that the male had placed her in a chokehold during the altercation. However, no visible injuries or markings were observed around her neck to support that claim.

Both parties were extremely intoxicated at the time of the incident, and three juvenile children inside the residence witnessed the altercation. Due to the nature of the incident and the juveniles being present during the altercation, DSS will be notified.

After placing the female subject under arrest and transporting her to the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office for booking and transport, she became extremely disorderly and combative while being removed from Deputy Lafferty’s cruiser. While deputy Lafferty attempted to place her back into handcuffs, she pulled away and scratched Deputy Lafferty’s right pinky finger in the process with her keys. It ultimately required assistance from another deputy to gain control of the subject and secure her in hand restraints.

The female subject was additionally charged with Assault 4th Degree on a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, Menacing, and Disorderly Conduct, along with the original domestic violence related charge. She was later transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
