🫍 🐋 Last week, a pod of orcas was seen outside of Trinidad State Beach attacking a gray whale calf and its mother. The calf and the mom escaped the attack by nearly beaching themselves. After some time, the mother returned to the open ocean, leaving her young calf, who was injured but alive, rolling in the waves. A few hours later, the calf was finally able to make it through the surf and back out into the open ocean. Although the calf was injured, it did not appear to be life-threatening, so it hopefully made it back to its mother! While it's hard to see a young gray whale getting attacked by an orca, remember this is a natural occurrence!

Thank you to Christine Connerly for the photos!

This week’s is devoted to California’s Redwood Lily (Lilium rubescens).

As you traverse alongside our 300ft+ Redwood giants make sure to keep an eye out for stems decorated in spiral leaves and trumpeted tepals (a mix of sepals and petals) that vary from soft yellows, bright pinks, or even deep reds. This species of lily is endemic to California with a rare plant ranking of 4.2, surely a sight for sore eyes...and sore necks from canopy gazing.

DYK? Lilies and Dinosaurs, such as the infamous velociraptor, existed at the same time! The lily family (Liliaceae) is amongst one of our oldest plant families, dating back to over 80 million years ago.

Come catch a glimpse of this paleo plant this Memorial Day weekend!

🚨WEED ALERT!
The North Coast Redwoods District's Weeds of the Week are Brassica species.
Several mustard species (Brassica sp.) from Europe and other countries are extremely invasive in California. These are annual herbs with small, pale yellow to bright yellow flowers with 4 petals. Mustards can grow very densely and up to about 6 feet tall. They are frost-resistant and produce thousands of seeds per plant, which can persist in the seedbank for up to 50 years. Mustards also produce allelopathic chemicals that prevent germination of native plants. Invasive mustards are commonly found on roadsides and in disturbed soil. Not only do invasive mustards replace native habitat, but they create dangerous fuel for wildfires. Although there are many invasive mustard species, California does have a few native species, such as the California mustard (Caulanthus lasiophyllus), which has white flowers and does not grow as aggressively as the invasive species.

Reforestation 🌲✨
During the week of January 26th - 29th , the California Conservation Corps (CCC) forestry crew, based out of Fortuna, assisted California State Parks in planting 765 conifer species in the Shaa-wu'-meh (Mill Creek) watershed acquisition, located within the Del Norte Redwoods State Park. The objective of the project was to enhance riparian habitat, promote forest succession, and foster career development skills for CCC members. Thank you to all the CCC members who were a part of this project for helping to restore our parks!

Calling all Nudibranch Enthusiast: There’s a new community science project for the sea slug lovers among us!

All May, take advantage of low tides and make new observations of nudibranchs in California tide pools. Stay tuned on social media for Tidepooling events on the north coast.

Lastly, why sea slugs? Well, beyond being colorful and diverse, these species are often overlooked as indicators of intertidal ecosystem health. Let's change that, together!

Join and learn more at the link in bio.

The last few blooms🌷

We are enjoying the last of the wildflower blooms at Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park this spring. By summer, many of the redwood parks' flowering plants will begin to fruit, offering a food source for wildlife large and small. These flowers are beautiful to the eye and serve a larger purpose in a redwood forest ecosystem.
Test your knowledge and see if you can identify each of these wildtlowers! (See answers below)

Flowers photographed:
1. Douglas Iris
2. False Solomon's seal
3. Wood rose
4. Colombian windflower
5. Pacific trillium
6. Thimbleberry
