The high of 100° at Abilene today is the 30th consecutive day with high temperatures of 100° or more. This tied for the record consecutive number of days with 100° temperatures. This record was previously set in 1952, from August 3rd through September 1st.

Hot and dry continues this week. Fire weather will be a concern as breezy conditions develop at times as well, especially across those areas that did not see significant rainfall last week. There is a chance that the tropical disturbance in the Gulf may bring enough moisture far enough west for a few showers or storms across the area on Friday afternoon, but chances are very small (20%).

Abilene is on the verge of breaking its record for consecutive 100+ degree days. After Sunday, it sits at 29 day and will likely tie the record this afternoon and break the record on Tuesday.

The bad news is that hot temperatures around 100 degrees will continue this week. The good news is that it won't be *quite* as hot as last week when temperatures were around 105. Regardless, the same heat safety tips still apply, so be sure to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities to the morning hours. And since school has started for most kids, be sure to be mindful of the heat when conducting activities such as athletics and recess.

Here's our extended forecast for the area through next week. Temperatures will continue to be warmer than normal, with little to no chance for any rainfall.

Abilene hit 101 for a high temperature this afternoon (Friday 08/28). This marks the 27th consecutive day that Abilene has hit at least 100 degrees. With highs forecasted to be above the 100 degree mark well into next week, the record of 30 consecutive days may well be tied on Monday and broken on Tuesday. The current record of 30 consecutive days occurred from August 3rd through September 1st of 1952.

Just for reference, the record for consecutive 100 degree days in San Angelo is 37, occurring from July 4th-August 9th 2022.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for areas across northern San Saba into northeast McCulloch County. This storm is moving towards the west, with 60 mph winds the primary threat. If anyone in that area north of US-190 has any strong winds or hail, please let us know!

Radar update at 215 pm August 28: A few showers and thunderstorms are developing south and southeast of Abilene, in southeast Taylor and southern Callahan Counties. A few other showers and stomrs may develop through late afternoon between Abilene and Brownwood, and in the area south of San Angelo to the I-10 corridor east of Ozona to Sonora and Junction, where cumulus cloud development is occurring. With hot temperatures, there is potential for one or two storms to produce strong downburst winds of 50-60 mph. Lightning will also be a hazard with storms, along with brief localized heavy rain.

The showers and thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and evening into early last night brought some much needed rainfall to scattered parts of the area, along with a brief cooldown of temperatures. Here are a couple of maps from the Texas Water Development Board showing rainfall amounts from yesterday. Rainfall from LCRA gauges are included. One map shows the Concho Valley and Heartland areas, while ther other map shows southern parts of the area. You can click on each map to see a larger version. The heaviest rainfall occurred in the southern half of San Saba County.

08/27/26 735 PM Update:

Scattered showers and storms continue across much of the Heartland and Northwest Hill Country this evening, with the activity generally moving to the south and southwest. We do not expect these storms to be severe, but heavier downpours, frequent lightning, and gusty winds over 40 mph will be likely with the stronger storms. The area from Brady to San Saba will be the most likely to see these storms through 9 PM.

08/27/26 555 PM Update:

Another cluster of thunderstorms moving into northeast San Angelo will move southwest across the city through 7 PM. We dont expect these storms to be severe, or even strong, but some heavy rainfall, occasional lightning, and wind gusts to 35 mph will be likely.

Farther south, more scattered storms continue to move south from south of Brady west to near Eldorado. Brief heavy rainfall, occasional lightning, and some gusty winds are also possible with this activity.
