It’s been hot here at the fort. Above 100 for some days! We did have a nice storm a few days ago. But otherwise, it’s been great!

Unfortunately, the puzzle postcard you bought from our Sutler Store 😉 never made it to Will & Emmy.
It has definitely seen better days!
But we were happy to receive it for them! Let us know where we can send it!

A little late, but still worth sharing!!!

Back in June, Dr. Powers joined us at the fort for his presentation of "Patriotism in the Past" as part of the 250th American and Texas series.

Well, it is finally finished!
It may have taken me a while to get this lecture posted (okay...a couple of months 😬), but we are excited to finally share it with y'all!

The Fort Concho Speaker Series will return from noon to 1 p.m. each Wednesday this September.

Each presentation will take place in the Fort Concho Commissary, 702 Burgess St. Admission is free and open to the public. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunches.

This year’s lineup of topics and speakers includes:

Did you know that Fort Concho is a part of the Texas Forts Trail Region?

As part of the Texas Historical Commission's Heritage Trails Program, this region, that was created in 1968 by TxDot along with 9 other regions, encompasses eight US Army forts situated along the trail, including one 18th-century Spanish presidio.
According to the THC website, this is one heck of a vacation as these trails span over “a 650 mile (that is 1050km for Europeans) scenic driving loop” spanning 29 counties in Central West Texas!

Pop quiz: what other event was going on in 1968 that led to the creation of the trails?
*Hint—it wasn’t Bob’s birth year.

The third annual Fess Parker “Fess-tival,” honoring San Angelo’s hometown Hollywood and television star, will take place Saturday, Aug. 15, at Fort Concho. The morning program will run from 10 a.m. to noon, and the evening program will be from 7 to 9 p.m.

All events will be at the fort’s Quartermaster Building, located at Burgess Street and East Avenue C. The Quartermaster Building served as the first home of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, a project Fess supported. Parking and admission are free.

The morning program will include breakfast, displays and exhibits, period games, an 18th century weaponry firing demonstration and a Daniel Boone/Davy Crockett lookalike contest. Contest rules and guidelines are available at fortconcho.com. Prizes will be awarded in the adult (18 and older), youth (13-18) and youth (12 and under) divisions.

The evening program will feature refreshments, a trivia quiz and a showing of the movie The Light in the Forest, starring Fess Parker.

Need a little Fort Concho ASMR?
Take a listen. (Don’t worry I held my breath so you wouldn’t hear me struggling😅).

Now imagine…hearing horses in the background. Men talking and officers giving commands. The sound of the blacksmith banging on his anvil. Children at the school house yelling out their answers. The officers wives gossiping…I mean talking about their every day lives.
Or hearing some of the enlisted men working on some wood work talking about what they plan on doing after their service. Maybe even some music from the musicians practicing.

Just listen.

One day come out and sit on a bench outside the barracks. Stare out into the field and imagine.

Imagine the lives of these people who were once here.

If we made an ASMR of Fort Concho, who would listen?! 🧐 I think we might be on to something here!

Now if I can only convince Bob to let me invest into “scratch-n-sniff” cards for the tours!
People will get to the Post Hospital and REALLY smell what the frontier was like.
