Low oxygen levels in the Concho River

Due to the heavy rains last evening, the Concho River is experiencing low oxygen levels resulting in stressed and dying fish. This morning, dissolved oxygen was 0.3 parts per million (PPM) above the Irving Street crossing where the video below was taken. Fish begin to stress at dissolved oxygen levels below 3 PPM and can die within a few hours when below 2 PPM. Stressed and dead fish were observed all the way up the river to the high school. Down river from Irving Street, we did not see many stressed fish, oxygen levels were 3.3 PPM at the Celebration Bridge and 4.6 PPM at Bell Street.

Low dissolved oxygen levels are a common occurrence in the Concho River during late summer and can be exacerbated when the hot stagnet river is suddenly stirred up by heavy rainfall. However, oxygen levels should improve throughout the day as sunny skies and photosynthesis should ramp up and release more oxygen into the water.
