A free New World screwworm inspector training is now available to all Texans through AgriLife Learn.

The course covers New World screwworm biology, inspection protocols, reporting and more, and is open to anyone who wants to better understand how to protect their animals. Those who qualify may apply to become a certified New World screwworm inspector through the Texas Animal Health Commission.

On June 11, 2026, a Tom Green County bovine was confirmed to be infested with NWS. An infested zone is being formed around the detection and will be reflected on the TAHC interactive map once it is officially established. On June 9, the sixth case of NWS was found in a bovine from Edwards County. The infested zone established around the case extends into portions of Sutton and Val Verde Counties. Animal owners can check if they are located in an infested zone and need to follow additional movement requirements by viewing the TAHC interactive case map: https://bit.ly/NWS-ZoneMap

The New World Screwworm is in the news and on the minds of many. Come learn the latest next week in Fredericksburg with members from TAHC and the USDA among many other organizations there to share information, and most importantly, answer questions. A meal will be provided (free) and 2 CEUs will be given to those interested. June 17th @ 6:00 pm at the Gillespie County farm Bureau Office.

USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed a case in a goat in Gillespie County, Texas. TAHC and USDA are working to learn more about the case, establish surveillance and testing, and spread awareness in the area.
