Make good memories, not bad decisions. 👍

That’s the message from Johnson High School PTSA Smart Driving Club ahead of Homecoming weekend.

Community partners came together to give our students a powerful reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence.

Students were challenged to drive a pedal car through an obstacle course while wearing impairment goggles and complete a field sobriety test. Students also saw vehicles involved in drunk driving crashes and read stories of the students killed in those car wrecks.

It was an eye-opening and sobering look at how quickly a celebration can turn into a tragedy. We want Homecoming weekend to be filled with great memories, and we want every student to get home safely!

Thank you to the Johnson HS PTSA, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the San Antonio Police Department, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, elected officials, Fire and Rescue teams and the many nonprofit and community partners who came together to show our students just how much their decisions matter.

That’s community support . 💙

Johnson Coach Passes Baton to Younger Athletes 🏃‍♀️

After training with Johnson High School Coach Michael Tummins for just a few weeks, seventh grader Naia Moctezuma started seeing results.

She learned to control her pace, not burning out before the finish line. She increased her speed and endurance by running intervals, improving her cardiovascular fitness.

Then she won her division of the 2026 USA Youth Triathlon National Championship last month.

“Training with Coach Tummins this summer was great,” the Tex Hill Middle School student said. “He gave me feedback on things I could improve, and in a few weeks of training, I felt I was running faster.”

In the division for 12-year-old girls, Naia crossed the finish line first with a time of 30:19, beating second-place by more than a minute.

But Naia isn’t the only North East ISD student to benefit from Coach Tummins’ wisdom and support.

By opening this summer’s running camp to middle schoolers and allowing them to train with high school athletes, Tummins is helping to build strong track-and-field and cross-country programs for the Johnson cluster.

“That’s a small decision with a big ripple,” said Francisco Moctezuma, Naia’s dad. “It gives younger kids a real on-ramp into the program, a chance to see what training alongside the high school group feels like, and a reason to stay in the sport. He’s quietly building a pipeline and treating the younger athletes like they already belong there.”

Tummins also holds student athletes to high standards, keeping them engaged and helping them to develop over the course of a season.

“The structure, standard and consistency he brings are the real thing,” Moctezuma said.

The show must go on… even when everything is falling apart. 🎭 Johnson Theatre’s production of Noises Off! is running now through Saturday, Sept. 26!

This high-energy comedy follows a nine-member theatre troupe performing a play within a play — giving audiences a hilarious behind-the-scenes look at everything that can go wrong. Forgotten lines, missed cues, relationship drama, frustrating props and, somehow, a whole lot of sardines. 🐟

Will Dotty, Lloyd, Garry, Brooke, Frederick, Belinda, Tim, Poppy and Selsdon make it through the show? Come find out — and laugh along the way!

As students begin the new school year, families are reminded that cellphones and other personal communication devices must be turned off and stored out of sight for the entire school day in accordance with NEISD policy.

We know this may be an adjustment for some students, and we appreciate our families working with us to start the year off strong and help students stay focused on learning!

Read the full letter from our principal at johnson.neisd.net/cellphone for additional information about the policy, exemptions and consequences for violations.

During a Special Board Meeting on Monday, May 18, the North East ISD Board of Trustees named Interim Superintendent Anthony Jarrett as the Lone Finalist for Superintendent.

“He has maintained a strong commitment to student success, academic excellence and community partnerships,” said Board President David Beyer. “We are confident that his leadership, experience, and vision will help guide our District forward, toward continued growth and opportunity for all staff students and families.”

Jarrett brings more than 25 years of experience in public education including six years with NEISD. He previously served as the District’s Chief Instructional Officer before being named Interim Superintendent in December of last year. Prior to joining North East ISD in 2019, Jarrett served as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in Northside ISD.

Following the announcement, Jarrett shared his gratitude to the board and enthusiasm for this next chapter.

“Sitting in this role is a humbling experience,” said Jarrett. “The mindset of service first and self second is something that I fundamentally believe in. I think working alongside you guys, I know our District will continue to grow, get better and be one of the best districts in the country.”

Per state mandate, NEISD trustees must wait at least 21 days before officially voting to appoint Jarrett as our District’s newest Superintendent.
