With rising costs, you shouldn’t have to pay more.

I believe the City should have made more cuts before asking residents to pay more, so I voted ‘no’.

Still, this budget includes wins we fought hard for: 49 new police officers, $129.8 million in infrastructure funding, and a 12% increase in Animal Care Services, higher fines for owners of loose and dangerous dogs, and continuing funding for women’s health.

Today I voted ‘no’ to increasing the city tax rate.

Residents are paying more for everything, from the gas pump to the grocery store.

When families are tightening their own budgets, they expect City Hall to do the same. I believe we had the opportunity to make further cuts before asking residents for more.

Despite this disagreement, today’s vote does not change our shared responsibility to move San Antonio forward. I know each of us remains focused on making sure every dollar reaches residents through safer streets, stronger neighborhoods, and reliable services.

Building a budget for a city with the size of San Antonio takes months of input from residents and debate among council members. It is not always easy, but these kinds of decisions affect all of us and can’t be taken lightly.

This is our city at work. 💙

Over the past couple of weeks, Lorenzo Gomez III () and I have sat with leaders, from City Manager Erik Walsh to Chief of Police Jesse Salame, to discuss how are city works, and how this process unfolds. Find the playlist to watch the full TRANSPARENCY TOUR in the link in my bio. 🔗

I agree with the Express-News Editorial Board. Families are already paying more for gas, groceries, water and electricity. This fall, nearly every local entity that sends you a bill is proposing a tax or rate increase. The City must choose a different path.

I’ve been pushing the city to find further reductions to prevent a tax increase. That means finding 1.6 percent of the proposed General Fund.

We can get there. 💙

Thank you to the Greater Chamber of Commerce for inviting me to speak this morning about the proposed property tax rate increase, and why the city should not raise the rate.

When families do well, everyone does well, including our local businesses. In a moment where families are already being asked to pay more at the grocery store and gas pump, the city must do what it can to avoid a rate increase.

What does policing look like beyond 911 calls?

It’s about building relationships with the people and neighborhoods our officers serve. SAFEE officers are assigned to specific areas, allowing them to know their neighborhoods, the people who live there, and the challenges they face.

That connection between officers and the community is an important part of keeping San Antonio safe.

Lorenzo Gomez III () and I sit down with Police Chief Jesse Salame (San Antonio Police Department) and Deputy Chief Raul Casanova (SAN ANTONIO FIRE DEPARTMENT) to talk about the importance of the SAPD and SA Fire Department, their budgets, and how it impacts residents in EPISODE 4 of the Transparency Tour.

Where does the City’s $489 million for Project Marvel actually come from?

Not the General Fund, which pays for police, firefighters, and streets. It comes from state tax dollars San Antonio only receives for a project like this, tax revenue from new downtown growth, and rent the Spurs will pay to use the arena.

Lorenzo Gomez III () and I break it down with Councilmember Dr. Sukh Kaur (Dr. Sukh Kaur) in EPISODE 5 of the Transparency Tour. Link in my bio. 🔗💙
