Today, our Texas House Defense & Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee is meeting in San Antonio to hear directly from veterans, advocates, legal experts, and community leaders about how Texas can better serve those who served us.

We are examining the transition of veterans’ mental health programs to the Texas Veterans Commission, access to legal representation for veterans pursuing disability benefits and appeals, and the continued redevelopment of Kelly Air Force Base and Port San Antonio.

Veterans should not have to fight through unnecessary bureaucracy to receive the care, benefits, and support they have earned. I am grateful to everyone sharing their experience and expertise with us today as we work toward meaningful solutions for the next legislative session. 🇺🇸

Today, the Texas House Committee on Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans’ Affairs is meeting at the Capitol to hear directly from law enforcement leaders, school safety officials, mental health professionals, and public safety partners from across Texas.

Our work includes reviewing the implementation of House Bill 33, part of the Legislature’s response to the tragedy in Uvalde, and examining the needs, challenges, and gaps facing law enforcement officers and public safety agencies across our state.

I am proud to serve as Vice Chairman of this committee and as one of only two Democrats at the table. I do not take that responsibility lightly. Our communities deserve thoughtful leadership, honest oversight, and a state government willing to put resources where they are needed most.
