NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Poland opened its vast ranges and trails Aug. 22-23 to a significant number of visitors by hosting the Norwegian Foot March at Bemowo Piskie Training Area, Poland.
The grueling 30-kilometer (18.6 miles) event united BG-P’s American, British, Romanian and Croatian troops with counterparts from Poland’s 15th Mechanized Infantry Brigade and 1st Territorial Defense Forces. More than 400 participated in the 2-day event.
The event, also called Marsjmerket, is a physical challenge where participants ruck the distance with 25 pounds strapped to their backs. The goal is to finish the course within a registered time to earn a foreign military badge. To earn the honor, competitors must finish with their rucks within varying times for different age groups.
Participants faced Mother Nature’s challenges of heat, hills, dusts and wind, along with the human factors of blisters, cramping and fatigue. It was a test of both resilience and stamina.
The event is so prestigious, the Norwegian Embassy, Office of the Defense Attaché, provides the official guidelines for the grueling event. Those who pass are awarded a certificate hand-signed by the embassy.
First held in 1915 as a test of marching endurance for soldiers in the Norwegian Military. A strategic goal was to be able to move larger units of troops over a great distance swiftly and in a manner that enabled them to efficiently be combat ready even after the march by carrying their rucksack /weaponry of 11 kg. The goal today is to stimulate the general interest of marching over extended distances amongst military and civilian personnel.

Roughly 50 NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Poland troops from United Kingdom, Romania and United States endured a tough physical and mental challenge recently be competing in the Tiger Race in Orzysz, Poland, a grueling extreme sports competition near the battle group’s operations area of Bemowo Piskie.
A murderous obstacle race, organizers consider it to be one of the most difficult events of this type in Poland. Competitors run, crawl, climb and nearly swim through barriers throughout different routes and course lengths. The routes were almost entirely located on operating Polish military training ground, otherwise inaccessible to civilians. Obstacles were specially designed so that each participant can experience a Soldier's struggle.
Participants had the opportunity to start in one of the four categories. The most demanding are Big and Small Barrell which is a 30-kilometer course with hundreds of obstacles.
A slightly less demanding division includes Military Cross and Military Training which are completed without outfit restrictions. The Cross is 21 kilometers long without obstacles, while Military Training is a 12-kilometer course with 30 obstacles.
Tiger Run started in 2012.

NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Poland participated in another prestigious event recently, joining the 102nd anniversary of Polish Armed Forces Day in Warsaw, Poland, by setting up a static display of vehicles that was reviewed by tens of thousands of Warsaw residents and visitors.
Polish Armed Forces Day is celebrated Aug. 15 annually as the commemoration of the Battle of Warsaw.
An American Stryker, or infantry carrier vehicle, lined up along two British Jackals and a Romanian Gepard as the Warsaw community met the NATO troops. Troops gladly shared photo opportunities and answered various questions about the vehicles and their weaponry.
Lt. Col. Trevor Phillips, battle group commander, participated in the main celebrations held on Pilsudskiego Square in central Warsaw. Other local and visiting military and political figures joined the honors that began with a ceremonial changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
U.S. Army Gen. Darryl Williams, the new commanding general of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, greeted battle group Soldiers. Williams explained that the U.S. presence was meant to deliver a message of “strength and resilience.”
“It is about deterrence, about being strong, NATO is strong, the Polish people are strong, and we are standing shoulder to shoulder with them,” he said.
The holiday commemorates Poland’s victory in 1920 over Soviet Russia in the Battle of Warsaw, which stopped the Bolshevik army’s westward advance. That year, the Polish army stopped the Soviet march to the West defeating the Red Army. The impressive victory halted the Soviet Russia's totalitarian conquest and saved Europe from Communist oppression.
