Did you know Yucaipa is where two brothers turned a $600 investment into one of Southern California’s most well-known grocery store chains? 🤝

Yucaipa’s story began with the Serrano village of Yukaipa’t, which means “wetlands.” Over time, the area developed into an agricultural community surrounded by small farms.

In 1910, the Redlands & Yucaipa Land Company purchased 11,000 acres and subdivided the land. For the next 50 years, Yucaipa became known as the fruit basket of Southern California, with apples, peaches, plums and walnuts grown throughout the region.

During the Great Depression, twin brothers Cleo and Leo Stater purchased a market in Yucaipa with a $600 down payment. When the brothers later left to serve as pilots in the Army Air Corps during World War II, their parents stepped in to help keep the business running. Following the war, the company eventually grew to more than 160 supermarkets known as Stater Bros. Markets.

Yucaipa continued to change after World War II as orchards gave way to trailer parks, chicken ranches and small housing tracts. In 1972, Crafton Hills College was established. On November 27, 1989, Yucaipa officially became a city.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning from 10 a.m. on Tuesday through 8 p.m. on Friday for Needles, Baker, Mountain Pass, Mitchell Caverns, Vidal Junction, Yucca Valley, Twentynine Palms and Morongo Valley. 🌡️ ⚠️

Temperatures could reach 115–118 degrees through Death Valley and the lower Colorado River Valley and 107–110 degrees in other areas. Extreme heat can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness. Stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, never leave children or pets in unattended vehicles, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

The San Bernardino County Department of Aging and Adult Services-Public Guardian (DAAS-PG) is proud to announce that two of its programs received Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards at USAging’s 51st Annual Conference and Tradeshow, held July 18-21 in San Diego. 🏆

The Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards recognize creative and effective ways to help older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers live safely and independently in their homes and communities. The awards are supported by Caregiving.com and Cumulus Care.

The Platinum Campus, a component of the Highland Creek Housing and Wellness Campus, previously known as Pacific Village, received an Aging Innovations Award, one of the highest honors presented by USAging to its members. Recognized as one of only 16 programs nationwide, the campus brings together housing, health care and aging services in one location, supported by wraparound services that include behavioral health treatment and recuperative care.

READY Together was also recognized as one of 33 programs nationwide to receive an Aging Innovations and Achievement Award. The integrated emergency preparedness, response and recovery framework helps protect older adults and people with disabilities during natural disasters and other emergencies.

The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, in partnership with LifeStream Blood Bank, will host a community blood drive on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at the district’s headquarters, located at 598 S. Tippecanoe Ave. in San Bernardino. Donations will be collected in the first-floor Assembly Room. 🩸

All donors will receive a limited-edition San Bernardino County Fire Protection District T-shirt and a $25 Target gift card while supplies last. San Bernardino County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Josie Gonzales has delivered the supplemental roll #140 to the auditor-controller/treasurer/tax collector.

The supplemental roll includes 12,590 parcels with a total net value of approximately $4.8 billion. As required under California law, changes in ownership or new construction trigger the assessor’s office to reassess the property. This generates supplemental assessments, which can result in supplemental property tax bills.

Supplemental assessments help ensure that property taxes reflect changes in property ownership and new construction. The resulting revenue supports essential public services throughout San Bernardino County, including schools, public safety, infrastructure and community programs.

Autism Society Inland Empire and the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District will host a free community safety expo aimed at connecting families in the autism and intellectual/developmental disability (IDD) community with local first responders.

The “Care and Connect: Fun Safety Expo” is set for Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at Miller Park Amphitheater located at 17004 Arrow Boulevard in Fontana. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet firefighters, police officers and paramedics from American Medical Response, ask questions and explore tools designed for neurodiverse individuals.

The event will also include a session on emergency communication strategies for high-stress situations; a “Fun Zone” with bubbles, sensory play and inflatables for children; free dessert for the first 300 guests; and American Sign Language and Spanish interpretation throughout the event.
