Did you know San Bernardino County offers tools to help homeowners add accessory dwelling units? 🏡

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) are small, independent living spaces built on residential properties. They offer flexible housing options for families, renters and homeowners looking to add space or generate extra income.

To make the process easier, San Bernardino County offers pre-approved ADU plans, which can reduce design costs and speed up permit review.

Did you know there is a lake in San Bernardino County that contains samples of at least half of the planet’s natural elements? 🌎

Searles Lake was discovered in 1862 by John Searles during a search for gold. Instead of gold, he uncovered one of the most mineral-rich lakes on Earth. The lake is approximately four times the size of Manhattan, stretching 12 miles long and 8.1 miles wide. Its surface is dotted with red, ultramarine and pitch-black pools of mineral-saturated brine. Summer temperatures can reach 115 degrees and rainfall averages just three inches per year.

Searles did not immediately recognize the significance of the lake when he discovered it while searching for gold. It took him almost a decade and an encounter with Francis Marion Smith, “The Borax King,” before realizing that he had discovered borax.

In 1873, Searles and his brother Dennis founded the San Bernardino Borax Mining Company and began mining and shipping borax in wagons. Searles was the first person to haul borax using the famous 20 mule team wagons. Today, the Searles Lake borax discovery has been designated as California Historical Landmark #774.
