FATAL CRASH INVESTIGATION UPDATE – AUGUST 30, 2026

We wanted to take this opportunity to provide an update regarding the major crash investigation that occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

At approximately 12:51 a.m., San Bruno Police patrol officers responded to a solo-vehicle crash in which a vehicle collided with a light pole near the intersection of El Camino Real and the westbound Interstate 380 off-ramp.

The San Bruno Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for investigating the circumstances and cause of the crash.

The driver, a 29-year-old San Francisco man, and his passenger, a 22-year-old San Francisco man, sustained major injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to a local area trauma center for further treatment and evaluation. Unfortunately, the passenger later succumbed to his injuries.

Out of respect for the privacy of those involved and their families, the San Bruno Police Department will not be releasing the names of the driver or passenger at this time.

During the investigation, officers determined the driver had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of both alcohol and drugs.

Following the investigation, the driver was arrested and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on charges including gross vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs causing great bodily injury or death, and possession of a controlled substance.

The San Bruno Police Department extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

We also want to use this tragic incident as a reminder of the very real consequences of impaired driving. Driving under the influence of alcohol can change lives in an instant and puts drivers, passengers, and everyone else on the roadway at risk.

If you have been drinking, do not drive. Plan ahead, designate a sober driver, use a rideshare, or call someone you trust. Impaired driving is preventable, and one responsible decision can save a life.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the San Bruno Police Department.

TRAFFIC ALERT – MAJOR CRASH INVESTIGATION

The San Bruno Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is currently on scene investigating a major crash near the intersection of El Camino Real and the westbound I-380 off-ramp.

As a result of the investigation, the following roadways are closed until further notice:

• Northbound El Camino Real from Bayhill Drive to the Westbound I-380 off-ramp at El Camino Real

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, use alternate routes, and expect delays in the surrounding area.

We will provide an additional update regarding this incident later today.

Today, members of the San Bruno Police Department visited Recruit Officers Rohlfes and Lee at the South Bay Regional Basic Police Academy at the College of San Mateo for their mid-term inspection.

Both recruits were inspected with a fine-tooth comb to ensure their uniforms and equipment met the high standards expected of San Bruno Police officers. The inspection also included a detailed check of their duty gear and fi****ms for cleanliness and proper maintenance.

Recruit Officers Rohlfes and Lee are doing well as they reach the halfway point of the academy, and we are proud of the progress they have made so far.

Keep up the hard work! We look forward to seeing both recruits cross the stage at graduation in approximately three months and take the next step toward serving the San Bruno community.

🚨 HEAR SOMETHING? SAY SOMETHING! 👂📞

Last night, officers responded to the 200 block of San Marco after a resident discovered several spent shell casings.

Our investigation revealed that around midnight, an unknown male walking northbound pulled a firearm from his waistband and fired several rounds into the air.

Several witnesses later told officers they heard the loud “pops,” but didn’t think much of it and didn’t call police.

If you think you hear gunshots, please call 911. You don’t have to be certain. Calling when it happens gives officers the best opportunity to respond quickly, locate evidence, and identify those responsible.

Happy Friday, San Bruno!

We didn’t want to forget to introduce one of our star students, School Resource Officer Val Oca - who has 18 years as a police officer! 😂

Officer Oca is heading into his second year as a School Resource Officer and is looking forward to another great school year with our students, staff, and families.

Officer Oca is living his childhood dream of becoming a police officer. When he’s not at school or keeping San Bruno safe, he loves spending time with his family and enjoying the occasional cheat meal — preferably a cheeseburger (or two). 🍔

If you see Officer Oca around campus this year, be sure to say hello!

🎒 School’s back, San Bruno! And so is the morning ritual of backpacks, lunch boxes, traffic, and suddenly remembering how school drop-off works. 😅

As our schools get back into the swing of things, our dayshift team 👮 was out this morning helping everyone get to school safely and making sure those good back-to-school traffic habits are back in session too!

A few reminders to help keep our kids safe:

🚗 Slow down and watch for pedestrians
📵 Phones down, eyes up
🚫 Red zones are still red zones, even when you’re really late (don't park there)
🚸 Expect extra activity during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up... so give yourself extra time

And students and families, you’re part of the safety team too! Use crosswalks, stay alert, put the phones away, and make eye contact with drivers. A quick wave 👋 is a great way to make sure they see you before you cross.

A little patience goes a long way. Let’s have a safe and great school year, San Bruno! ❤️

🚔 ALPR HELPS OFFICERS LOCATE PROLIFIC MAIL THEFT SUSPECTS 📬

On August 10 at approximately 11:23 p.m., San Bruno Police officers responded to the 700 block of Shelter Creek Lane for a report of suspects burglarizing mailboxes. The suspects fled before officers arrived in a white Honda sedan.

Using investigative information and our Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system, officers identified the suspect vehicle and began checking other apartment complexes throughout San Bruno.

Officers soon located the white Honda abandoned at another apartment complex. ALPR information then helped officers determine the suspects had just stolen a red Honda sedan from an apartment complex on Piccadilly Place.

With a new suspect vehicle identified, San Bruno Police Communications quickly issued a Be On the Lookout (BOL) notification to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

🚨 At approximately 2:52 a.m., the California Highway Patrol located the stolen vehicle in Oakland with three individuals.

Inside the vehicle, officers located dozens of pieces of suspected stolen mail, credit cards, and identifying information belonging to numerous victims. (Due to the sensitive nature of these items, we have elected not to post photographs of the recovered property.)

A 24-year-old San Jose woman, 19-year-old Los Banos man, and 18-year-old San Jose man were arrested and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility for charges related to mail theft, possession of stolen property, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of narcotics, and conspiracy.

This case highlights how technology and proactive police work can work hand-in-hand. ALPR technology can provide officers with timely investigative leads, but it does not replace good police work—it enhances it. In this case, those leads, combined with diligent investigative work, helped officers connect multiple crimes, identify a newly stolen vehicle, and provide neighboring agencies with information that ultimately helped locate the suspects across the Bay.

The San Bruno Police Department is sharing the following community advisory on behalf of our partners at the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is currently investigating a burglary at the San Bruno Post Office.

If you recently visited the San Bruno Post Office or deposited mail into a collection box serviced by that office—including collection boxes in the South San Francisco area—your mail may have been affected.

Residents are encouraged to monitor their bank accounts, credit card accounts, and other financial statements for any unauthorized activity. If you are expecting important mail that has not arrived, or you believe your mail may have been stolen or compromised, please report it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service using the web link or QR code provided in the attached graphic.

The San Bruno Police Department is proud to help organize the Peninsula Law Enforcement Cadet Leadership Academy, a three-day leadership program dedicated to developing the next generation of law enforcement leaders from Cadet and Explorer programs throughout San Mateo County.

Today, cadets participated in leadership development training and had the opportunity to learn from an outstanding group of guest speakers, including San Bruno Police Chief Matt Lethin, as well as representatives from the San Jose Police Department, San Mateo Police Department, and Mountain View Police Department.

Throughout the academy, cadets are challenged to strengthen their leadership skills, build confidence, and develop the teamwork and professionalism that will serve them both in law enforcement and throughout their lives.

We are grateful to our instructors and partner agencies for investing their time, knowledge, and experience into these future leaders. Their commitment to mentorship plays a vital role in preparing these young men and women for success, regardless of the career path they choose.
