Last week, our SCSD community came together for our annual retirement picnic celebration! 🎉 It was a wonderful afternoon filled with gratitude, connection, and appreciation as we honored seven incredible retirees whose dedication has shaped the lives of countless students and families. Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to Gigi Banfield, Angela Becher, Jill Sebben, Carol Scannell, Gail Walters, Jean Tech, and Alicia Young. Your years of service, compassion, and commitment have left a lasting legacy in our schools, and you will always be a part of the SCSD family.

A special thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success—from our amazing Maintenance Team and staff volunteers to our trustees, union leaders, principals, and all who joined us in celebrating. The teamwork, care, and community spirit on display are what make San Carlos School District such a special place to work and learn. 🌟 Spotlight on Excellence: Our Amazing Substitutes 🌟

At last night’s Board meeting, we recognized the dedicated substitute teachers and classified substitutes who step in each day to support our students, schools, and staff. Their flexibility, commitment, and care help keep learning and essential operations running smoothly when employees are away.

We also celebrated beloved substitute teacher Vicci Mueller, who was recently honored as San Carlan of the Year by the San Carlos Community Foundation. Congratulations, Vicci, and thank you to all of our substitutes for the difference you make every day! 🍎

The SCSD Board approved the appointment of Dr. Maeve Mulholland as our new Director of Special Education. With more than 20 years of experience serving students with diverse learning, behavioral, and social-emotional needs, Dr. Mulholland brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and a deep commitment to inclusive education.

We are excited to welcome her to the San Carlos School District and look forward to the positive impact she will have on our students, families, and staff. 💙

🚜 This week, we proudly celebrated ceremonial groundbreakings at Brittan Acres and Arundel for our TK Expansion Projects!

These investments will create additional learning spaces for our youngest learners as enrollment continues to grow. Brittan Acres is also receiving HVAC upgrades, and both schools will benefit from new windows and doors, creating more comfortable, energy-efficient learning environments.

A special thank you to Board President Sarah Kinahan, San Carlos Mayor Pranita Venkatesh, City Council Member John Dugan, and San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller for joining us and sharing heartfelt remarks about the joy of living in a community that values education, supports families, and comes together to invest in children.💚

Interested in making a difference in our schools and community?

The San Carlos School District Board of Trustees invites community members who are considering running for the School Board to attend a Candidate Information Session. Current Board members will share why they chose to serve, the commitment involved, and the roles and responsibilities of Trustees.

📅 Candidate Information Sessions:
• Thursday, June 4 | 5:00–6:00 p.m. | Virtual
• Thursday, July 9 | 7:00–8:00 p.m. | In-Person & Virtual

These sessions are designed to help prospective candidates learn more about Board service and ask questions in an informal setting.

Today, we celebrated two exciting bond-funded projects that will enhance our schools and support students for years to come! ☀️🚜

At Heather School, we officially broke ground on our TK Expansion Project, a two-year investment that will create additional learning spaces for our youngest learners as enrollment continues to grow. Heather is also receiving HVAC upgrades and building envelope improvements, including new windows and doors, creating more comfortable, energy-efficient learning environments for students and staff.

At White Oaks School, we celebrated the start of HVAC upgrades and building envelope improvements, including new windows and doors, as well as roofing improvements. These upgrades will enhance comfort, energy efficiency, and the overall learning environment for students and staff while helping preserve the campus for years to come.

A special thank you to Board President Sarah Kinahan, City Council Member , and San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller’s representative .mueller for joining us and helping mark these important milestones. We are grateful for the partnership and support that make these improvements possible.

These projects are part of our community’s continued investment in safe, modern, and inspiring learning environments for all students.

May in schools is often called the “100 Days of May” — because somehow, we fit 100 days worth of events, celebrations, learning, and memories into just one month! 🎉

From Open Houses, state testing, field trips, concerts and performances, Hometown Days, Teacher & Staff Appreciation celebrations, class parties and spirit days, students visiting their next schools, awards ceremonies, volunteer breakfasts, and Kindergarten/TK orientations… our campuses are full of energy, excitement, and meaningful moments.

It’s a busy season, but also one of the most special times of the year as we celebrate growth, achievements, transitions, and the incredible community that makes it all possible.

Thank you to our students, staff, families, and volunteers for making the “100 Days of May” so memorable! ☀️💚
