San Clemente Lifeguards are advising all beachgoers and surfers to exercise caution through Thursday 8/27/26 due to high surf and high temperatures.

What to Expect:
• Elevated surf of 4 to 6 feet with sets of 7 feet
• Dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding
• High temperatures

Rising surf, intense rip currents, and record heat—combined with shorter daylight hours—have significantly increased coastal hazards. Safety is a team effort, and your cooperation helps our lifeguards keep everyone safe.

Ocean Safety Guidelines

• Always Swim Near a Lifeguard: Professional rescuers are your best line of defense. Please swim only in front of an occupied lifeguard tower.
• Check with the lifeguards: Before entering the water, take a moment to ask a lifeguard about current conditions, potential hazards, and where it is safest to swim.
• Rip Current Awareness: If you are caught in a rip current, stay calm. Do not swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current, then swim back to the beach. If you cannot escape, float or tread water and wave an arm for help.
• Know Your Limits: The ocean is powerful. Even experienced swimmers should stay within their abilities. If in doubt, stay out.
• Swim with a Buddy: Never swim alone.
• Protect Yourself: Wear waterproof sunscreen, stay hydrated, and always enter the water feet first.

Heat Advisory

• Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before and during your time at the beach.
• Seek Shade: Take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned location.
• Limit Exposure: Avoid prolonged time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. Wear lightweight clothing and a hat.
• Monitor Your Health: Watch for signs of heat illness, such as dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, or unusual fatigue.

Friday Night Flag Football 🤝 NFL Flag

The City of San Clemente’s Friday Night Football League has joined NFL Flag! This means your child’s team gets to rep your favorite NFL team this Fall Season! More league information is available at www.sanclemente.gov/sports

But WAIT, there’s more. We officially have the first Friday Night Football girls-only division! We are so excited to encourage female players as they learn, grow, and develop in this incredible sport.

The league is not possible without the support of our Volunteer Coaches and Referees! We still need coaches in various divisions, in both male and female divisions. For more information, email [email protected]!

Did you know FNF referees are paid $40/game? If you’re available on Friday nights this Fall, and you love the game, come make a little extra cash and ref with us! Interested? You guessed it. Email [email protected].

The San Clemente Junior Lifeguard Program has officially wrapped up its final session of the summer! 🌊☀️

The Junior Lifeguard Program is designed to help 9-16 year-olds become ocean-minded by teaching them about beach and ocean hazards, water safety, and respect for the ever-changing marine environment—all while having fun!

Participants strengthened their swimming and physical fitness, learned basic first aid, CPR, and fundamental water rescue skills, while gaining confidence through daily challenges and time in the ocean. Junior Guards learned the importance of teamwork, responsibility, respect, perseverance, and leadership, qualities that extend far beyond the beach.

A special thank you to the dedicated Junior Lifeguard instructors, whose mentorship helped shape the next generation of ocean stewards while ensuring every Junior Guard had an incredible summer.

Join the fun next year! For more information, visit www.sanclemente.gov/JG
