A couple of months ago, I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and last week, I had a successful surgery which showed it had not spread. Given the early detection, my successful surgery, and overall good health, I have an expected cure rate of 99% and look forward to a full and speedy recovery.

Through this experience, I kept thinking about how lucky I was to have access to care when I needed it most. Millions of women and families in this country don’t.

Breast cancer is one of the most common – and, if caught early, most treatable – cancers in America. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Early screening can save lives. If you’ve been putting off a checkup or a test, please, don’t wait!

I’m approaching the days ahead with a renewed sense of purpose, and I’m more committed than ever to continue to represent my constituents of District 5 at City Hall. Thank you for everyone’s support.

On May 20, 2026 the Environmental Services Department (ESD) completed a mini cleanup in Carmel Mountain Ranch! 5.03 tons of waste was removed, with 0.73 tons being recyclable waste. As families and communities gather to celebrate Eid al-Adha, we recognize the values at the heart of this holiday - faith, compassion, generosity, and service to others.

This year’s celebration also comes at a time of deep pain for many in our San Diego Muslim community following the horrific and hateful attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego. We mourn the lives lost, stand with the families and loved ones affected, and reaffirm that hate and violence have no place in our city.

Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating. May this holiday bring peace, healing, and strength to our communities.

Colleges and universities should be places where students are encouraged to think critically, learn, and pursue their aspirations — not places targeted for political intimidation. Silence is not an option when higher education is under attack.

In March, the Department of Justice opened investigations into UC San Diego and other universities, demanding years of admissions records while threatening institutions with the loss of federal funding if they do not comply. That’s not freedom, that’s not academics, that’s control.

On June 16th, I’m bringing forward a resolution to the San Diego City Council condemning Donald Trump’s attacks on higher education and academic freedom. We cannot allow political intimidation to undermine our colleges, our students, or the independence of our educational institutions.
