A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the 3rd Annual Side By Side Reentry Conference & Expungement Clinic, and the name truly captured the experience: Side by Side.

A huge shoutout to Jonas and Armand for creating a powerful space where government, community-based organizations, and people with lived experience came together to learn, connect, and build solutions.

From Chef Jeff Henderson’s powerful story of transformation to insights from Andrew Strong, Assata Michelle Thomas, and Reginald Washington, I left reminded that real change happens when we stop working in silos.

My biggest takeaway: people closest to the challenges must be part of designing the solutions.

Reentry is about more than second chances it’s about opportunity, workforce development, removing barriers, and recognizing people’s potential.

When we build side by side, we build stronger communities together.

A few weekends ago, I attended the Club FBS (Finances, Books & Sneakers) End-of-Year Showcase and left inspired.

Watching these young men confidently share what they learned reminded me why investing in youth matters. This wasn’t just a celebration; it showed what happens when mentors believe in potential.

Club FBS is more than a book club — it’s a mentorship program blending literacy, financial literacy, emotional intelligence, civic engagement, and brotherhood to help Black and Brown boys become confident leaders. This year it served 51 young men, kept an overall 3.03 GPA (high schoolers averaged 3.6), distributed 400+ books, and saw 100% of graduating seniors enroll in college.

One of my favorite moments was seeing four young men recognized for their growth:

🏆 Titus – Money Master of the Year
🏆 CJ – Conquer Yourself Award
🏆 John – James Baldwin Literary Leader of the Year
🏆 Kurstin – Young Brother of the Year

Congrats to each of you — your commitment and leadership are inspiring.

Huge shout-out to Ronald Preston Clark and Brandon S. Johnson for their visionary leadership in building a brotherhood where young men read relatable books, build generational wealth, strengthen emotional intelligence, and explore identity and leadership.

Thank you to the families, mentors, volunteers, partners, and community supporters who pour into these young men. It takes a village.

The future is bright because these young brothas are leading the way.
