Today we remember Eugenio Ruiz Hernandez, the latest recipient of our Volviendo A Casa program. Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, Eugenio tragically passed away after being struck by a vehicle in El Cajon. With no identification and no immediate family in the United States, he was initially listed as a John Doe while authorities worked to confirm his identity with the help of DNA samples provided by his relatives in Mexico.
After speaking with Juan Lozano, a longtime friend and neighbor, we learned more about the life Eugenio built during the more than 20 years he spent in the United States. He leaves behind his wife, three sons, and daughter in Oaxaca. Throughout the years, Eugenio made countless sacrifices to provide for his family, often taking on different jobs and living modestly so he could send most of his earnings home.
Though separated by distance, Eugenio was never alone. He built a community of friends who cared deeply for him, and when tragedy struck, that same community came together to ensure he would not be forgotten.
Through our Volviendo a Casa program and in partnership with Altar Funeral Home, Eugenio is finally on his way home, where his family will be able to give him the farewell they deserve and honor the life of a husband, father, friend, and hardworking man whose love for his family knew no borders.
