During our latest Day Laborer Outreach, volunteers distributed 50 care packages at the Fairmount and Marketplace Home Depot locations, providing much-needed supplies to help laborers stay cool, hydrated, and cared for.

Each package included water, gatorade, electrolytes, reusable water bottles, fresh fruit, T-shirts, cooling towels, snacks, hygiene items, and Know Your Rights cards. And, of course, some lime paletas!🍋‍🟩

Day laborers did their best to find shade, but there was no escaping the temperatures. Many shared how frustrating it is to stand in the heat, waiting and not knowing when the next job will come.

Last Saturday, Border Angels partnered with the UCLA Department of Medicine for a Day Laborer Outreach, visiting two Home Depot sites in Fairmount and Lemon Grove. Together, we distributed 40 care packages filled with hats, water, mandarin oranges, snacks, and hygiene items for day laborers.

We also helped two laborers connect with our Free Legal Consultations program. One laborer shared that he had been injured on the job and was unsure how to seek medical care. His shoulder injury had become so severe that he was unable to use his dominant arm.

For the UCLA residents who joined us, the outreach was an opportunity to learn directly about the experiences and realities day laborers face. While immigration is not a new topic for many future physicians, understanding the barriers undocumented workers encounter when seeking healthcare is an important part of learning how to better serve their future patients.

During the reflection, residents spoke about being moved by the gratitude, vulnerability, and perseverance they encountered. Thank you to the UCLA Department of Medicine for joining us and learning alongside our community.

This month’s Caravan of Love brought us to Jesucristo Vive shelter in Tijuana, where four cars packed with supplies, toys, and love made their way across the border.

With the support of Psicólogos Sin Fronteras, we spent time with families at the shelter and distributed much-needed supplies, including lots of toys for the children.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated to our Back to School Drive and helped make this Caravan possible. Your generosity allows us to continue showing up for migrant families with care, dignity, and community.

And a special thank you to our volunteer Daisy for capturing these moments and sharing her photos with us!

Last week, students from UCSD’s Critical Community Engagement 120 joined Border Angels for a Day Laborer Outreach in Lemon Grove and Imperial Marketplace.

Students decorated care packages with encouraging messages and drawings before heading out to meet with nearly 50 laborers. While some were hesitant at first, they quickly connected through meaningful conversations and were touched by the kindness, stories, and gratitude shared by the workers.

The outreach also highlighted the realities facing San Diego’s day laborer community. We learned about a recent ICE raid that resulted in two laborers being detained, as well as workers seeking legal support after experiencing workplace harm and financial barriers to maintaining their immigration status.

Outreach is more than distributing supplies. It is about showing up, listening, building trust, and reminding our community that they are not alone.

Thank you to the students for showing up ready to learn, serve, and connect.

Back to School Caravan of Love! 🎒📚❤️
This weekend, our Caravan of Love is heading back to Tijuana, and we’re collecting school supplies, snacks, clothing, shoes, and other essentials to help children staying in shelters get ready for the new school year.

After more than nine months detained at Otay Mesa Detention Center, Dima* is finally free.

Dima is a Russian opposition activist who spoke openly against Russia’s war in Ukraine. After facing persecution by Russian authorities, he was forced to flee Russia and seek asylum in the United States. While detained, he also faced the added challenge of managing asthma, which significantly impacted his health and quality of life.

Through a collaboration with Casa Marianella, Border Angels was able to help him pay his bond and walk out of detention. He has now safely arrived at Casa Marianella in Texas, where his sponsor will support him as he begins this next chapter of his life.

“I spent over nine months detained at Otay Mesa. During that time I got seriously ill more than once, and there were moments when I truly didn’t know how much longer I could hold on.

When the judge set my bond, I felt hope for the first time in a long time. And then reality set in - I had no money left to pay the bond and walk out the door.

That is when Border Angels stepped in.
You responded without hesitation. Within days, it was done. And I walked out of that place a free man.

I am safe now, starting a new chapter, and that is because of you. Thank you - more than words can say.”

After spending a month detained at the Otay Mesa Detention Center, David was reunited with his community through the support of our Familias Reunidas Bond Fund.

Originally from Kenya, David came to the United States in 2017 on a student visa. A biochemist by training, he came seeking opportunities that would allow him to support his family back home. For years, he has helped provide for his parents, siblings, and his 19-year-old son, making sure his son has access to a quality education and a brighter future.

While detained, David shared that he witnessed immigration officers encouraging detainees to sign paperwork agreeing to leave the United States. According to David, detainees were told they would receive $2,000 upon arrival in their home country if they agreed to return.

No one should have to make life-changing decisions while detained and separated from their loved ones.

Because of supporters like you, he was able to leave detention and continue fighting his case with dignity and freedom. Every bond posted means another family has hope, another person has a chance to reunite with their community, and another life is changed.
