The office files about 40,000 criminal cases a year and balances prosecution with numerous crime prevention programs. In this six-minute interview, DA Stephan discusses the case, the importance of holding offenders accountable, and the warning signs of domestic violence that everyone should know.

Domestic violence can happen behind closed doors, and victims may face fear, isolation and barriers to seeking help. Knowing the signs, speaking up and connecting victims with resources can save lives.

Behind every overdose statistic is a person who mattered. A family who is grieving. A life that cannot be replaced.

Today, on International Overdose Awareness Day, San Diego County came together to remember those we’ve lost—and recommit to saving lives.

There is progress. Overdose deaths dropped 36% from their 2021 peak, with 105 fewer lives lost in 2025 than the year before.

But the crisis is changing.

Methamphetamine is now involved in more overdose deaths in San Diego County than fentanyl. That means we must keep evolving our approach—expanding prevention, treatment and education while making sure our resources reach the communities that need them most.

A tragic reminder: We all have a role in protecting vulnerable older adults.

Travis Bodle, 56, has been sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder for killing his 77-year-old mother, Vicki Bodle, in their Jamul home in January 2024.

Vicki suffered from Parkinson’s disease and required caregiving assistance. After she was attacked by her son, her caregiver discovered what had happened and immediately reported it to law enforcement.

Her story is a reminder that speaking up matters. If you care for an older adult, regularly check in, stay alert to changes in their well-being and don’t ignore concerns about their safety. If something doesn’t seem right, report it and seek help.

“Vicki Bodle was a vulnerable elderly woman who depended on others for care, and tragically, she was killed by her own son,” said DA Summer Stephan. “This sentence holds him accountable for the devastating loss of his mother and provides justice for her and those who cared for her.”

We joined Mayor Todd Gloria, Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego (CCDSD), and property owners Dene Oliver and Jim McMillan to announce the opening of 160 new shelter beds for unhoused single women and women with children. The addition of these beds means these vulnerable populations will have more options for a safe place to stay and supportive services they need.

With these new beds, Rachel’s Promise Center for Women and Children in Downtown San Diego now offers a total of 210 shelter beds—about 110 for single women and 100 for women with children.

We thank everyone who has worked with us and our partners to make this crucial expanded shelter space possible.

If someone calls you demanding payment with either of these, it’s one of the biggest red flags of a scam. Stop. Hang up. Tell someone.

District Attorney Summer Stephan joined Assemblymember Laurie Davies at a Senior Scam Stopper event in Oceanside to help educate our community on how to recognize and avoid fraud before it happens.

Scammers often pressure victims to pay immediately using cash, gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or even gold bars, because these payments are difficult to trace and nearly impossible to recover.

Remember: Legitimate government agencies, law enforcement, banks, and utility companies will never demand payment using gift cards or cash.

The best defense against scams is awareness. Share this video with a parent, grandparent, friend, or neighbor—you could help prevent someone from becoming the next victim.

Last week, community members came together at One Safe Place North One Safe Place: San Diego County Family Justice Centers for an important educational event focused on two of the greatest threats facing our families: human trafficking and fentanyl.

District Attorney DA Summer Stephan joined Supervisor Jim Desmond, San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Kelly Martinez, and other public safety leaders to empower attendees with the knowledge and tools to recognize warning signs, prevent victimization, and protect our communities. DA Stephan shared how education, awareness, and early intervention are critical to stopping human trafficking before it happens, while Sheriff Martinez highlighted the deadly dangers of fentanyl and the importance of prevention.

A special thank you to Therese Cisneros-Remington for organizing this impactful event and bringing our community together around a shared mission: keeping our children, families, and neighborhoods safe through education, collaboration, and prevention.
