Zone Zero requirements were recently adopted by the California Board of Forestry, and we know that our Poway community has questions! The Poway Fire Department is hosting two Zone Zero Defensible Space Information workshops as part of its outreach efforts.

Residents are invited to attend either session: Tuesday, Sept. 8 or Thursday, Sept. 10. Both are free and begin at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers (13325 Civic Center Drive). Registration is appreciated to assist with planning but is not required.

Welcome Captain Nanette McMasters to Poway! She was selected to lead the San Diego Sheriff’s Poway Station and today is her first day. Captain McMasters most recently served as a captain for the Training Division, Regional Public Safety Training Institute.

“Captain McMasters has an impressive resume in terms of depth of experience and leadership skills,” said City Manager Chris Hazeltine. “But just as important is her enthusiasm for being a part of our Poway community, understanding our city’s partnership with local law enforcement, and her ability to continue the strong foundation established by the captains preceding her.”

Captain McMasters started her career in law enforcement in 1998 as a probation officer. She is a seasoned law enforcement leader with progressive experience across training, patrol, investigations, communications, backgrounds/recruiting, and personnel divisions. She has served in multiple patrol stations throughout the county as a lieutenant, sergeant, and deputy, including Vista, San Marcos, and the North Coastal Stations.

“I am honored and excited for the opportunity to serve as the next Captain of the Poway Sheriff’s Station,” said Captain McMasters. “I believe successful public safety outcomes rely on strong relationships, transparency, and a shared commitment to the community. These principles strengthen our effectiveness and affirm our dedication to ensuring that the residents, businesses, and community partners of the City of Poway feel valued, protected, and supported by the Sheriff's Office members who serve the community.”

Poway’s former captain, Claudia Delgado, was selected to serve as captain of the Sheriff’s Major Crimes division.

Due to limited volunteer availability and the crew requirements necessary to safely operate the steam locomotive, it will not be in operation this Saturday, September 5, as previously announced.

We are excited to announce that the Poway Midland Railroad Locomotive will be back in operation THIS Saturday, September 5!

Thank you for your patience and understanding while the locomotive was down for it's annual summer maintenance. Our hardworking volunteers have been busy getting everything ready, and we can’t wait to welcome passengers back aboard!

We're o-fish-ally nearing the end of Night Fishing season! This Friday and Saturday only, try for the night bite at Lake Poway after-hours until 11:30pm.

Fishing and boating permits can be bought at the Lookout at Lake Poway for a nominal fee. Boats can stay out until 11:00pm. Stock schedule subject to change.

City Engineer Tracy Beach along with traffic engineering consultant Jason Stack shared an update on the Espola Road corridor adaptive traffic signal project and future traffic safety management plans at the city council meeting on Tuesday evening.

Development Services Director Julie Procopio introduced the presentation, noting that we are one month in from the time we went live on the new technology. The city staff and traffic consultants are actively monitoring the system (online and by driving the corridor), collecting real-time data, and gathering community feedback. All of this is being used to refine the system.

The adaptive traffic signals are not expected to be perfect when first installed; the system is continually gathering information and learning. The project is “progressing as expected,” according to Beach. She cited that most of the issues reported were from motorists waiting to turn onto Espola Road, not driving on it. And while adjustments are being made, the quick signal detection that motorists became accustomed to while the traffic signals were in “free” mode are not the goal. The goal is to achieve the most efficient way to serve the entire corridor and move traffic through the series of eight intersections along Espola Road.

Changes have already been initiated based on feedback. The timing is being adjusted at two key intersections to improve traffic flow during the morning school rush (Espola Road/Valle Verde Road and Espola Road/Del Poniente Road). And the adaptive traffic signal system will be placed on “free” mode midday, when traffic is minimal.

Beach welcomes feedback at [email protected] and asks community members to include as much detail as possible to describe their concern, including date, time of day, location and direction they were heading.

September is Emergency Preparedness month and to kick things off Poway Fire Chief Brian Mitchell shared an update on both wildfire and El Nino preparedness at the Sept. 1 Poway city council meeting.

Chief Mitchell touched on the new Zone Zero requirements adopted by the California Board of Forestry and encouraged residents to invest in learning more.

“Statistics show that 90% of homes destroyed in wildfires are from ember casts,” Chief Mitchell said. Ember casts happen when strong winds carry embers well ahead of the main fire and create new spot fires.

The city’s focus is on compliance through community education. As part of its outreach efforts, Emergency Services Manager Jenna Stein is offering two Zone Zero Defensible Space Information workshops next week.

Camping your way returns to Lake Poway this fall! Set up your tent and explore the park at your own pace; Hike the many trails, drop a line to catch a fish, cruise the lake on a motorboat, or simply relax by your campsite, and take in all the natural beauty that Lake Poway offers.

Fishing permits and boat rentals are not included, but may be purchased at an additional cost. The upcoming campout on September features a screening of the film Daddy Day Care (PG) at 7:15pm. Popcorn will be available, free of charge.
