It lets the tribe care for the land, maintain the site, and open it back up to the public. It puts stewardship in the hands of the people with the deepest connection to it.

California lawmakers have approved legislation that could make California Native American Day an official paid holiday for state employees.

AB 1841 cleared the Legislature on August 31 and now heads to Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Introduced by Assemblymember James C. Ramos, a member of the Serrano/Cahuilla Tribe and California’s first Native American state lawmaker, the bill would recognize Native American Day as a state-employee holiday once necessary funding is provided.

California Native American Day is observed annually on the fourth Friday of September.

Ramos has worked toward establishing the paid holiday since 1998, when he served on the San Manuel Tribal Council. In 2021, legislation he authored established Native American Day as a paid holiday for California judicial employees.

The bill is not law yet. Gov. Newsom must still act on it, and broader implementation would require legislative funding.

Coming soon to the Museum of Us! 𝘒𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘺𝘢𝘢𝘺 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘺𝘢𝘢𝘺 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 opens on Saturday, September 12.

This immersive exhibit is based on the two-part graphic novel titled, Our Past, Present, and Future, and Beyond Gaming, authored by Kumeyaay scholars and historians Ethan Banegas, Michael Connolly Miskwish, Lorraine Orosco, and Stanley Rodriguez. The vibrant, colorful comics are illustrated by John Swogger.
