The Q3 Impact Story is LIVE! 🎉

Our latest Impact Story features Alabama Manor residents Denise and Ron, highlighting how access to nutritious food supports well-being, dignity, and independence.

Thanks to a grant from the San Diego Foundation’s San Diego Unity Fund, Community HousingWorks is providing grocery gift cards and shelf-stable foods to older adults impacted by the end of the USDA’s Commodity Supplemental Food Program. These resources help ease financial stress and stretch fixed incomes, ensuring residents have greater access to the nutritious food they need to thrive.

Community HousingWorks President & CEO Sean Spear is a well-recognized, award-winning leader in the affordable housing industry. His impact throughout this sector runs deep, including his start in New York, working at Fannie Mae, serving as Executive Director of the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee, now leading a top affordable housing nonprofit, and so much more. However, his latest accolade is something special.

It is with the utmost pleasure that CHW announces Sean Spear has been selected to receive the 2026 Nathan D. Taft Award for Leadership & Character in Affordable Housing from Affordable Housing Finance.

-A strong moral compass
-A spirit of generosity, humility, and mentorship
-Leadership defined by integrity and perseverance

The CHW team is delighted that AHF has chosen to honor Sean in this way, as it could not be a more fitting recognition of his years of service. The award will be handed out at next month's AHF Live: The Affordable Housing Developers Summit in Chicago. Congratulations Sean!

Today Community HousingWorks and Laing Companies celebrated the groundbreaking of Covina Senior Apartments, a new 60-unit community being developed in Covina, California. In their first project together CHW and Laing Companies are thrilled to be bringing additional homes for seniors to the San Gabriel Valley. Designated for adults 62 years and older, Covina senior apartments focuses on inclusive design for older adults. "Senior housing is a growing necessity in the San Gabriel Valley we're excited to break ground on an affordable housing development that will address residents' needs as they age, both now and into the future, with dedicated set-aside units for blind and low-vision residents," shared Alexis Laing, President and CEO of Laing Companies.

The six-story building will offer one-bedroom apartments for residents 62 and older earning 30% to 70% of area median income, including 15 units reserved for residents with vision impairment. Indoor and outdoor common spaces are designed to encourage social connection and support residents' independence. Priority will be given to occupancy preference to households affected by those fires and future Los Angeles County wildfires that result in a FEMA major disaster declaration.

Many thanks to everyone who joined us at today's groundbreaking, including our speakers Alexis Laing, President and CEO of Laing Companies; Kevin Leichner, Senior Vice President of Housing and Real Estate Development at CHW; Ruby Harris, Board Member of Community HousingWorks and Senior Director, Capital Solutions & Partnerships Southern California, Enterprise; Gustavo Velasquez, Director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development; Dan Millsap, Deputy Director of Real Estate Services Division of the California Department of General Services; Tim Parham, Assistant Deputy Director of the Housing Development and Finance Committee; Marina Brookins-Odom, Senior Relationship Manager II of First Citizens Bank; Sooji Yang, Assistant Project Manager at Laing Companies; and Natalie Tong, District Representative for California State Senator Susan Rubio.

In addition to Covina Senior Apartments, CHW and Laing Companies have more projects in the works together. "Building on our success in Covina, our next project in the works with Laing Companies is 129 family apartments in Fresno and we continue to look for more partnership opportunities. We were able to come alongside Alexis Laing’s development expertise with our successful track record, project management team and balance sheet, and we are thrilled that we could be part of Laing Companies' first project to break ground," says Kevin Leichner.

That’s a wrap on another great San Diego Housing Federation Affordable Housing & Community Development Conference! 🏡

Community HousingWorks was proud to be a sponsor and to join affordable housing and community development leaders from across the San Diego region for a day of connection, collaboration, and conversation about the future of our communities.

We were especially proud to have two CHW team members contribute to this year’s program:
🎤 Elizabeth Jewell took the stage as a contestant in the Lunch & Afternoon Keynote: Affordable Housing Family Feud Gameshow.
🎙️ Sean Spear moderated Federal Housing Policy in Midterm Election Year: Promise and Peril, bringing together perspectives on the federal policies shaping affordable housing.

Thank you to the San Diego Housing Federation for another fantastic conference and to everyone who connected with our team throughout the day. We’re grateful to be part of a community committed to expanding access to affordable housing and building stronger futures for San Diego.

Until next year!
