MCRD San Diego Museum

The MCRD San Diego Museum interprets the history of the United States Marine Corps, with an emphasis on the history of the Marine Corps in Southern California.

We are a Federal Museum operated by the United States Marine Corps.

The MCRD San Diego Museum will be OPEN on Saturday 5 September from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and will be CLOSED on Monday 7 September in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

The MCRD San Diego Museum is grateful for the recent help provided by the Miramar Young Marines and the MCRD Museum Foundation. These young volunteers, along with with their leaders and Active Duty Marines who volunteer with the group, and the MCRD Museum Foundation replanted landscaping in the front of the museum, and in the museum courtyard.

The MCRD Museum could NOT operate without its volunteers and without the support of the MCRD Museum Foundation. Thank you@miramaryoungmarines and for your continued assistance!

Today in Marine Corps History - Major General Smedley Butler

On 21 June 1940, Major General Smedley D. Butler passed away at Naval Hospital Philadelphia. Butler’s long and storied legacy with the Marine Corps began when he enlisted at the age of sixteen amid the Spanish-American War. As a Marine, Butler traveled all across the globe in service of his country. From the far corners of East Asia to Central America, Butler left behind an incredible legacy. Awarded the Medal of Honor twice, Butler was a war hero, but perhaps more importantly, he was recognized as a leader devoted to his men. Butler was beloved by those in his charge throughout his decades of service commanding Marines on the battlefield and the homefront.

Butler was also instrumental in the expansion of Marine Corps Base San Diego, serving as the Commanding General from 1926-1927. Please join us today in celebrating the life and legacy of Major General Smedley D. Butler, 30 Jun 1881 - 21 June 1940.
