ARREST MADE IN ISLAMIC CENTER SHOOTING – Since the horrific incident at the Islamic Center of San Diego unfolded in May, our teams have worked diligently alongside the FBI to leave no stone unturned in the case. Today, a Grand Jury in North Carolina indicted a 17-year-old female suspected of aiding the shooters from across the country.
 
She has been charged with three counts of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder.
 
This arrest is a meaningful step toward justice for the three irreplaceable lives that were lost that day. The impact this had on their families, the Islamic Center and our greater San Diego community continues to be felt every day.
 
We stand committed to exhausting every lead to hold anyone who may have played a role in the shooting accountable. This case is still considered active, and investigators will continue following the evidence to bring justice to the victims and their families.
 
The investigation into the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego reflects extensive collaboration among the San Diego Police Department, the FBI San Diego Field Office, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in San Diego, FBI field offices across the country, including the FBI Charlotte Field Office, and with assistance from the Winston-Salem Police Department, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office.

On August 28, 2026, at 1615 hours, Kenneth Sims left his residence on the at 4000 block of 48th Street located in the Colina Del Sol area. Sims is considered At-Risk. Sims is an 82-year-old White male. He is 5’7”, weighing 152 lbs., has gray hair, and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans and Skechers brand shoes. He is known to frequent the MTS bus system.

Today, we honor and remember San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting our community.

Officer Machitar was killed in the line of duty after a fleeing driver crashed into his patrol vehicle at the intersection of Doliva Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.

Austin proudly served the San Diego Police Department for more than five years. During that time, he dedicated himself to protecting the people of San Diego and serving alongside the men and women he considered family.

Austin was a beloved son, brother, friend, partner, and fellow officer. His loss left an immeasurable impact on his family, his SDPD family and the community he swore to protect.

We will always remember Austin for his service, his sacrifice and the life he lived. His legacy continues through those who knew him, served beside him and carry his memory forward.

After a career defined by service, Tundra, an outstanding detection dog, retired in 2025 and enjoyed his retirement before his recent passing.

Today, we remember Tundra, the beloved SDPD K9 who dedicated seven years to keeping San Diego safe.
Tundra was one of three “Mobile Odor Detection” K9s selected to help establish a groundbreaking canine counterterrorism program developed with the Department of Homeland Security and Johns Hopkins University. Trained in detecting explosives carried by people while working off-leash in crowded environments, Tundra became an instrumental part of protecting major events and dignitaries.

Throughout his career, Tundra performed hundreds of explosive sweeps at events including Comic-Con, San Diego Pride, and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. He also worked alongside protective details for every living U.S. president, state and federal dignitaries, foreign officials, and religious institutions.

His work included criminal investigations, locating evidence and fi****ms, and even providing security during a meeting involving foreign diplomats.

When he wasn’t working, Tundra could often be found meeting the community at K9 demonstrations and public events.

Through countless assignments, Tundra helped provide an extra layer of safety and deterrence for the people of San Diego.

We are proud to say that no explosives ever entered a venue or protective detail where fundra was assigned.

Over a kilogram of co***ne. More than 16 fi****ms. Illegal kits to build fi****ms. High-capacity magazines. Hundreds of prescription pills. More than $40,000 in cash.

Detectives followed the evidence. The suspects left plenty of it behind.

These are just some of the results of an 11-month investigation led by SDPD Mid-City Division detectives into drug trafficking and weapons violations across City Heights, Downtown San Diego, and Pacific Beach.

Detectives uncovered a network operating from multiple homes and vehicles, using social media to sell narcotics to college students while manufacturing and distributing illegal fi****ms.

In June 2026, detectives served 15 search warrants across San Diego County, targeting homes, vehicles, and Instagram accounts tied to the operation. The coordinated enforcement resulted in seven felony arrests.

Detectives seized more than two pounds of co***ne, eight gallon-sized bags of ma*****na, five gallon-sized bags of psilocybin mushrooms, 630 Xanax pills, Percocet pills, digital scales, and more than $40,000 in cash. They also recovered more than 16 fi****ms, including illegally modified rifles, firearm build kits, loaded high-capacity magazines, a substantial amount of rifle and handgun ammunition, five ballistic vests, and a ballistic helmet.

This investigation was a collaborative effort between SDPD, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office – Narcotics Division and Narcotics Task Force Team 8.

Today, we remember San Diego Police Officer Jeremy Henwood.

On August 6, 2011, Officer Henwood was stopped at a traffic light when he was ambushed in an unprovoked attack. Despite the efforts of two citizens who stopped to help, Officer Henwood succumbed to his injuries early the following morning.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Officer Henwood had served with the San Diego Police Department for four years.

Fifteen years later, his sacrifice has not been forgotten.

We remember his service.
We remember his courage.
