Emma Trelles will share from her most recent works and answer questions from attendees. Her poetry has been celebrated as “…luxurious and scrumptious, socially relevant, with oomph and sizzle.”

Trelles is the daughter of Cuban immigrants and author of Tropicalia (University of Notre Dame Press), winner of the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize; her current manuscript, Courage and the Clock, was a finalist for the 2026 Louise Bogan Award for poetry & shortlisted for the 2025 Donald Hall Prize. She is the 9th Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara, California, and the recipient of an Established Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council and a Poet Laureate Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets. A graduate CantoMundo fellow, her translations were longlisted in the Best Literary Translations 2027 anthology, and her work recently appears in Poetry International; New England Review; Poetry; and the Academy’s Poem-A-Day series. She is series editor of the Alta California Chapbook Prize, open to Latine poets in the U.S. and published in bilingual editions by Gunpowder Press.

🚩 Save the Date for the Hugh C. Hyde Living Writers’ Series with Poet D.S. Waldman
Wednesday, October 14, Leon Williams Room (LL430), 7 - 8 p.m.
Free and open to the public

D.S. Waldman will read from his celebrated poetry collection, Atria. Of the work, Aracelis Girmay raves, “An understated, exquisite work of intellect and lucid attention, a minor geography made of language, suggestion, and absence.”

Waldman is the author of the poetry collection Atria (Liveright/WW Norton, 2026). His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Los Angeles Review of Books, ZYZZYVA, and many other publications. His honors include a NYSCA Individual Artist Grant, Poetry Society of America’s Lucille Medwick Memorial Award, and a Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University. Waldman lives and teaches creative writing in New York City. He’s at work on a novel.

Each semester, thanks to an endowment created by her family and friends, the Laurie Okuma Memorial Reading honors the memory of SDSU alumna, Laurie Matsueda Okuma.

This fall, 2026, Okuma Author, Alicia Upano, will share excerpts from her debut novel, Everything to the Sea, which has been lauded as “An arresting, profound, and fiercely beautiful debut.”
