San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team

San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team Not all who wander are lost, but we search for the ones who are. On call, 24-7, 365, when people in our mountains and county need help.

When a hiker is missing or injured, or wildfire threatens foothill residents, or a child is missing, the Sheriff’s Department and Fire Departments call the San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team into action. We serve the area from the San Gabriel River to the east end of Los Angeles County, from Orange County to Angeles Crest. In addition, we stand ready to assist other teams and agencies locally and beyo

nd when people are in need. This team is officially designated to respond to searches for missing children, overdue or lost hikers and downed aircraft in wilderness areas and parks, and to evacuate homeowners threatened by floods or advancing fires.

Our 88 Mountain Patrol on Saturday revealed — not surprisingly — that the mountains are busy this weekend! Campgrounds are full, the sun is out, and the waters of the San Gabriel River are cool and clear.

We enjoyed interacting with the public at Heaton Flats, seeing our “Leave No Trace” friends set up at the base of the mountain providing valuable information, assisting CHP with a vehicle over-the-side investigation, and responding to a rattlesnake bite at Camp Williams.

The attached video shows Copter 11 transporting the rattlesnake bite patient to the hospital.

Enjoy the holiday weekend, stay safe, and always have a plan for how to get help should things go sideways. No Trace Los Angeles County Fire - Air OperationsCHP - Baldwin Park San Dimas Sheriff's Station

Stranded hiker rescue near Mt. Baldy.

Yesterday evening, our team was paged for a 60-year-old hiker who became stuck near a waterfall off Mt. Baldy Road after attempting to explore the area. Unable to safely descend, he tried continuing up the trail in hopes of finding a way out but quickly found himself in a more precarious position.

SDMRT members responded and were en route, preparing for a technical rescue in steep terrain. Fortunately, Los Angeles County Fire Copter 11 was able to respond and successfully perform a hoist rescue.

The hiker was uninjured, safely transported, and able to return to his vehicle.

This call is a strong reminder of how quickly conditions can change in the mountains, especially when venturing off established trails. Even experienced hikers can find themselves in situations where the terrain becomes unforgiving.

We’re grateful for the coordinated response and strong partnership with LA County Fire

Stay on trail. Know your limits. Plan ahead.

When the call came out this afternoon from our team responded to a report of a missing adult who had not returned from a walk and was unfamiliar with the area. Time was a critical factor, and our members began mobilizing quickly.

While en route, Search and Rescue personnel spotted an individual matching the description near the reported location. A family member was brought in to assist with identification, and thankfully, the individual was confirmed safe. After being missing for several hours, he was simply disoriented and had lost his way.

No injuries. No medical emergency. Just a safe return home.

Moments like this are a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Every call matters. Every response has the potential to bring relief to a family and a positive outcome to someone in need.

Training meets inspiration.

Members of the San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team had the opportunity to work alongside a local youth group this week—sharing hands-on skills like building a 4:1 raising system and a Tyrolean traverse. What stood out most wasn’t just the systems we built, but the energy, curiosity, and teamwork these young participants brought to every challenge.

Experiences like this are a reminder that rescue is more than response. It’s about education, mentorship, and investing in the next generation of problem solvers.

Thank you to this incredible group for showing up ready to learn and try something new. The future looks strong.
