Melissa Mendoza was a teacher in the San Elizario community. She gave all the love, support, and devotion she had to her kids and the community at the same school for 23 years. Even as she struggled through her illness, she still came to school everyday for as long as she could to teach and inspire her students. This fundraiser is set up by a personal account and is not associated with the San Elizario Independent School District nor any of it's campuses.
A race Saturday morning in San Elizario will benefit Raramuri communities in Mexico. The Activate Comunidad Walk/Jog/Run is sponsored by the nonprofit AYUDA and will feature renowned runner Arnulfo Quimare. The race begins at 8 a.m. at AYUDA, 1325 Beverly Ann Drive, in San Elizario.
Categories, in all age groups, include 1 kilometer, 2 kilometers and 5 kilometers, with awards for the first 20 placers.
People can register at 915-851-0272.
In a news release, organizers said families, strollers, wagons and pets are welcome.
There will be free snacks for participants. There also will be food, live music, local artists and entertainment.
People can bring chairs. Although the race is free, donations of blankets, jackets, cotton fabric, beads and thread will be collected for Raramuri communities, organizers said.
Quimare is one of the world’s best runners, the news release said.
Organizers said that once a year, the Raramuri, also known as the Tarahumara, of Mexico's Chihuahua state run the Copper Canyon Ultramarathon, a 47-mile footrace that has drawn some of the best athletes from around the world.
The news release states that Quimare, a Raramuri goatherder who was wearing handmade sandals, won the race in 2006, defeating seven-time Western States 100 Mile champion Scott Jurek.
Arnulfo is featured in the best-selling book, “Born to Run,” by Christopher McDougall. Arnulfo has run the Boston Marathon in huaraches and traditional garb.
