What a turnout, San Fernando! Thank you to everyone who joined us for National Night Out, an event that brings neighbors and first responders together to build connections and promote a safer community.

It was wonderful to see neighbors, families, and our public safety team come together. Thank you to the staff, volunteers, and community partners who helped make it all possible!

Today, we pay our heartfelt respects and remember the life and service of San Fernando Police Sergeant Benjamin W. Mushaney. 🌟 💙👮‍♂️

On October 7, 1930, Sergeant Mushaney was shot in the chest with a r***e bullet while responding to a landlord-tenant dispute in the 1300 block of Hollister Street. The shooting occurred at 11:20 in the morning and involved a female tenant attempting to obtain a $2.00 refund from the suspect, the landlord. As Sergeant Mushaney approached the front portion of the home, the suspect fired at him from an open window. The soft-nosed bullet struck Sergeant Mushaney in the chest, who then stumbled around the side of the house and collapsed, mortally wounded. The suspect then shot the female tenant, striking her in the back. The gunman barricaded himself in the residence and continued to shoot at responding officers and residents in the area. Officers from several jurisdictions arrived at the scene and eventually administered tear gas into the home. The suspect was ultimately shot and killed by officers as he fled the home on foot, still firing at officers. Although he is gone, he will not be forgotten. 💙👮‍♂️

Here are some tips to beat the heatwave:
🚰 Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or juice.
❌ Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can contribute to dehydration.
💦 Cool down by wiping your skin with cool water whenever needed.
👕 Dress in lightweight and light-colored clothing to stay comfortable.
🕐 Seek shade and stay indoors during the hottest time of the day (11 am - 4 pm).
🌬️ Find relief in air-conditioned locations if possible.
👵 Check on older, sick, or frail individuals who may need assistance coping with the heat.
🚗 Never leave children or pets unattended in closed vehicles, even for short periods.

It’s always special to see our community come together to support San Fernando students!

The San Fernando Police Department was contacted by Estate Sales by Connor and Pacific Coast Estate Sales, who generously offered to donate extra drum sets to local schools. SFPD connected with schools in the community to share the opportunity, and San Fernando High School and Mission Continuation High School were happy to accept the donations.

Thank you to Mayor Garcia and Councilmembers Mendoza, Solorio, and Rivas for joining us to celebrate this wonderful act of community support. A special thank you to Estate Sales by Conor and Pacific Coast Estate Sales for thinking of our local schools and giving back to the community.

These drum sets are more than instruments—they’re an opportunity for students to explore their creativity, develop new skills, and enjoy the power of music.

When our community comes together, our students benefit!

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE 🚧 Heads up, San Fernando! The alley in the San Fernando Mall between Brand Boulevard and Maclay Avenue will be closed for construction Friday, September 25 through Friday, October 2, from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Please use alternate access during construction hours and allow extra time when traveling through the area.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve the San Fernando Mall.

The City of San Fernando was notified that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security conducted a warrant operation within City limits this morning.

DHS personnel were staged near First Street and Harps Street during the operation. The operation concluded less than two hours later, and DHS personnel are no longer in the City.

No additional information regarding the operation has been provided to the City at this time.

For those requiring assistance, please contact the San Fernando Together program at sanfernando.gov/san-fernando-together or call 818-898-1210. The program provides emergency relief and essential services for residents in need, regardless of immigration status.

La Ciudad de San Fernando está al tanto de que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de Estados Unidos (DHS) realizó esta mañana un operativo para cumplir una orden dentro de los límites de la ciudad.
