First presidential debate! Brief observations and thoughts after Prez and VP of SFSU CR banded with Young Republicans of San Mateo for the watch party:
- Biden says Trump didn't take the pandemic seriously while Trump listed backup sources (even Fauci) who said he'd done a great job.
- Biden: "What we trust is a scientist...imagine your house feeling that much lonelier because someone you love had died."
Trump: People would rather be political with Covid than save lives.
- Biden: calls Trump "being smart" and a "racist." Typical stuff.
Trump: "Don't use the term 'smart' with me."
The term 'racist' these-a-days is so serious that I would've immediately called out Biden for that.
- Biden says he's supporting a Biden deal, not the "Green New Deal."
*endorses it anyways beforehand. Gee I wonder.*
- Biden also spewed more ad hominem attacks on Trump than vice versa. I don't distinctly remember Trump stooping to that level, but I don't doubt that he was being just as snarky and "out for points" in the debate against Biden.
- Some of the conservatives I know say that Trump should not have dodged the question on his stance on white supremacy. While I don't disagree with their opinion, Trump should've called out the question for what it was: asinine rhetoric that only furthers outdated notions of what it means to be a white supremacist.
- Chris Wallace declared both candidates the losers tonight. As nuanced as I think the statement is, I did see a lot of bickering last night between the two.
I may have missed some bigger key points as I'm sure there were, but luckily we have tomorrow to discuss this night's debates.
