SF Ocean Edge is a coalition of individuals and organizations who are concerned about the impact of an artificial turf sports complex with stadium lighting on the western edge of Golden Gate Park. The Beach Chalet soccer complex project destroyed one of the few open grasslands in Golden Gate Park by removing over seven acres of living grass and replacing it with artificial turf. It installed over
150,000 watts of sports lighting on 60 foot poles, that is lighted from dusk until 10:00 p.m. Bright lights disrupt the natural environment and affect migratory birds and other wildlife. Located right next to Ocean Beach, the banks of lights ruin the beauty of Ocean Beach for strolling couples at sunset and the Dark Sky for families studying the night sky. On a foggy night, the glow over the park is seen from the surrounding area. In addition, the project cut down over 55 trees. It increased the parking lot by 33% -- and yet San Francisco claims to be a "transit-first" city! It added more paving for a concrete border around the fields (8 feet wide) and within the playing area (30 feet wide). Bleachers for over 1,000 people were installed built. Nothing is left that says this was once habitat and parkland. Golden Gate Park has a Master Plan which states that the park's main design is that of naturalistic parkland in which recreation takes place. This project is NOT naturalistic, and it destroyed parkland for residents and visitors who are not athletic. There were alternatives, but these were ignored by the Recreation and Park Department. Golden Gate Park was and is the wrong place for this project!
