Bernal Hill Park is a semi-wild oasis in the city, a lovingly restored habitat for native plants, a beloved playground for dogs, a place to meet your neighbors, and a place to take in the breathtaking views of the city and the bay.

The rains work their magic. Nothing quite like the green of fresh shoots of grass.

There will be one more meeting planned for April 4th. From the documents posted, it looks like they will be attempting to close a number of trails on the west and north faces of the hill, and in the case of the bluff trail, relocating it uphill away from the bluff. I'm sure most of the changes will be beneficial, but I have to admit that I'm worried that many of the trails and shortcuts I use requently will be shut down.

So please review the plans and Q&A they have posted.

I met an SFNAP team in Glenn Canyon today, doing restoration work there. They are also active on Bernal, with a work party schedued for the 3rd Sunday of the month, from 10am-2pm. Nice to know that the tradition of volunteer restoration work started by Barbara and Roland Pitschel is alive and well.

Bernal Hill provides visitors with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama and clear views of San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, downtown, San Bruno Mountain and the hills of the East Bay. These windswept slopes are still sunny when Twin Peaks is shrouded in afternoon fog. Red-t...

Four years ago this week, Bernal Heights lost some of its most remarkable residents — a pair of Great Horned Owls. The owls lived in a tree along the western side of Bernal Heights Boulevard, and for a time they were a popular neighborhood attraction. Then one died, on April 9, 2007. The second died

After posting the note about the native plant restoration work party, I learned that one of the organizers of the work parties, and one of the key restoration volunteers, passed away over a year ago. We continue to benefit so much from his work and his legacy.

Roland Pitschel, whose quiet passion for native plants helped restore the grassland on San Francisco's Bernal Heights Park, died Aug. 1 after a long battle with cancer. He was 67. "He lived well and he died well,...
