San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club Calls for Unified District Maps to Enhance Voter Accessibility and Integrity in Response to California Voting Rights Act Legal Challenge on at Large elections

The San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club wholeheartedly applauds the process towards district elections from at-large for San Francisco’s City College and Board of Education elections, recognizing it as a significant step forward in ensuring our electoral processes are more inclusive and representative of our diverse communities. This change is not just a win for democracy but a crucial advancement for equity, giving voice to those in our neighborhoods who have historically been marginalized.

We urge the City College Board of Trustees and the Board of Education to align on creating unified district maps, a move that will echo the recent shift towards district elections. This unified approach is crucial for simplifying the voting process, enhancing accessibility, and boosting democratic engagement. Our communities comprise families who are both SFUSD and City College students. Both education institutions' are a cornerstone of economic opportunities for firstcomers, migrants, immigrants, and multigenerational families. Divergent maps create confusion and undermine public trust. A transparent, collaborative mapping process, with both boards making informed decisions, is essential for integrity and public confidence.

Furthermore, we call on both the City College and San Francisco Board of Education to prioritize impartiality over political interests in this endeavor. The integrity of our neighborhoods and the future of our students should stand apart from individual political ambitions. Learning from recent redistricting controversies, this process must remain untainted by political manipulation, ensuring it serves the broader interest of our communities.

We believe that unified district maps across our educational institutions would not only streamline electoral participation but also reinforce the importance of local governance and community representation. It is a necessary step to ensure that all sectors of our government reflect the will and needs of the people they serve.

“Chan said she was shocked when Liu allegedly challenged her to a fight”

A vulgar tweet that riffed on famous rap lyrics and suggested San Francisco's progressive supervisors could “die slow” has resulted in two of them filing police reports.

The San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club officially wiped its debt with the Treasurer’s office. In 2018, the sole president of the club & treasurers missed an entire year of filings, resulting in a 10k debt. After 5 years, the new leadership of the club put the debt to rest!

The San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club condemns violence against Latino hotdog vendor from SF Public Works employee
Violence against vendors by city employees is intolerable

San Francisco, CA - On October 2nd, a video surfaced of a Latino hotdog vendor being chased and having a cart flipped by a Public Works employee near Fisherman’s Wharf. The San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club strongly condemns this act of violence from a city employee, and demand an investigation and immediate action against this employee.

There is also a disturbing trend of the criminalization of vending in San Francisco, particularly in the Mission and on our public plazas and spaces. VENDING IS NOT A CRIME, and our vendors deserve the opportunity to sell wares without harassment, and without outrageously overpriced permits. This ‘pay for permit’ process to vend food and goods in City streets essentially locks much of the Latino community out of the ability to earn a living safely due to language access and costs, while opening them up to criminalization from City employees and law enforcement, as referenced with yesterday’s incident.

The San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club calls for the City to establish city designated “pulgas” (flea markets) on city owned land in the Mission and Tenderloin, as well as the full and immediate decriminalization of all vending in tourist spots like Union Square, the Embarcadero, Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Park, Chase Center, and Oracle Park. Our vendors deserve the opportunity to thrive and sell safely.

Some highlights from this weekend’s Building Latino Power fundraiser.

When new leadership assumed responsibility of the org earlier this year - there was $300 in the bank & $5k of $10k debt still owed from 2018.

This weekend we raised $300 short of $20k, & we honored amazing mujeres leading with their feet during Latine Heritage Month. Si Se Puede!

Introducing our Democrats Lifetime Achievement Award, Esperanza Macias!

Esperanza Macias was born and raised in Oakland. As a teenager, after getting stopped at a Safeway entrance by a UFW volunteer and learning about the struggle of the campesinos, she became a regular volunteer with the Oakland boycott house. As an Affirmative Action applicant, Esperanza attended UC Berkeley where her activism in MEChA and the fight for the recruitment and retention of people of color continued to develop her worldview on the importance of giving back to one’s community in its many fights for social change.

As a proud Chicana le***an, Esperanza has worked in various nonprofits for almost 40 years, including serving at Dolores Street Community Services, Health Initiatives for Youth, Openhouse, The Women’s Building, and at Instituto Familiar de la Raza for the past 12 years.

She was the Campaign Manager for Tom Ammiano’s supervisorial race, worked on campaigns for David Campos and Eileen Hansen, and was the Northern California Field Manager for the statewide No On Knight initiative that sought to limit marriage to a man and a woman.

Esperanza was a founding member of the Q***r Latino PAC, Vice-President of the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, and a two-term President of the Latino Democratic Club. She currently serves as a member of the California Office of Health Equity Advisory Committee.
