Confused about some of the terms used in whisky production? We wanted to take a moment to clear up a few common Whisky misconceptions we've encountered throughout our journey...
- Bourbon does not need to be produced in Bourbon County to carry its name. Legally (yes, there's a law), a bourbon must contain at least 51% corn in its mashbill and must be aged in new, American Oak barrels. To be called a "straight" whisky, it must be aged for a minimum of 2 years.
- Single malt Scotch originates from a single distillery in Scotland (not a single grain). Blends, like Johnnie Walker source whiskies from multiple distilleries.
- Tennessee Whisky (like Jack Daniels) must come from TN and it goes through a filtration step known as the Lincoln County process, which filters the distillate through maple charcoal.
