Happy Pride Month San Francisco! The very first Pride flag flew over UN Plaza in 1978, and was designed by artist Gilbert Baker after activist and Supervisor Harvey Milk asked him to come up with a symbol for the LGBTQ community. Today, the Rainbow Pride Flag continues to wave over Civic Center as well as the rest of the City. We’ll see you at Civic Center Plaza for the San Francisco Pride celebration on June 27 and 28!
Via Gilbert Baker Foundation: “June 25, 1978. Artist Gilbert Baker releases the original Rainbow Flag into the windy skies of San Francisco and the greatest symbol of hope and liberation ever created by human hands is born.” 🏳️🌈
“The rainbow is a symbol of harmony, and if we eliminate any color from the rainbow flag, we destroy the integrity of the rainbow. So too, with the family of man. If we eliminate any one group, or gender, or race, we destroy the integrity of the family of man.”
Gilbert Baker
