Following in the Footsteps of Heroes

What happens when a group of Bay Area seniors travels to the heart of the Civil Rights Movement? In this powerful new San Francisco Senior Beat column, Bill Snyder reflects on a journey through Atlanta, Selma, Montgomery, and Birmingham, where he visited historic landmarks, met movement veterans, and confronted the painful legacy of racial violence and segregation.

From the Edmund Pettus Bridge to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Snyder's story is a reminder that history is not just something we remember—it can inspire us to act. Read how one trip left him asking an important question: What more can each of us do?

Making new, meaningful friendships is not only possible as an older adult—it can be one of life's most rewarding experiences. Whether through classes, community activities, volunteering, or shared interests, new connections often grow into lasting friendships.

These two ladies share a birthday month and decided to take each other to an afternoon movie. Doesn't that sound like a great idea?

Emergency Preparedness is always on our minds, but one Community Connector participant took it a step further by creating an educational workshop for neighbors and community members.

The workshop, “What to Do If the Tap Runs Dry: The Scoop on Poop,” provides practical information about preparing for water outages and other emergencies. Designed to help residents understand how to manage sanitation, hygiene, and daily needs when water service is disrupted, the program encourages people to think ahead and be ready before a crisis occurs.
By sharing her knowledge and initiative, she is helping build a more informed, resilient, and prepared community.

No Mass Layoffs. But Seniors and People with Disabilities Are Still Paying the Price.

Mayor Daniel Lurie’s proposed budget may have avoided the large-scale layoffs many feared, but it still includes $8.9 million in cuts to programs serving seniors and people with disabilities — including cuts to technology access, employment assistance, legal services, geriatric mental health programs, and other vital supports that help people remain independent, connected, and housed.

The fight is far from over.

On Monday, June 15, members of the Dignity Fund Coalition, older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers, and advocates will gather at San Francisco City Hall for the Senior & Disability Day of Action. Community members will share firsthand stories about what these cuts would mean for their lives and call on city leaders to restore funding before the budget is finalized.

A budget is a statement of values. Join us and tell City Hall: Restore the cuts. Protect our communities. Fund San Francisco’s values.
