If you are registered to vote in California, there are quite a few propositions on your ballot that can have a major impact on incarcerated people. Prop 20 seeks to restrict parole and keep more people detained, limiting chances at rehabilitation and true justice. We can't allow our state to take yet another step backward. Vote no on prop 20.

Going backwards on sentencing reform will not make us safer. This November’s election presents a

In light of recent challenges we have been facing as a nation, as a society, and as individuals who care for human dignity and equity, we would like to draw attention to the impact of these challenges on individuals who are facing incarceration on top everything else.

It’s no overstatement to say that this has been an extremely troubling, extremely painful time for us as a society. Landscape and a building’s design may not seem like a big deal on the surface, but if you’ve ever had to stare at the stark white walls of a hospital exam room before, you realize that the way a place looks—and the opportunities you have to interact with your environment, particularly nature—have a huge impact on happiness, wellness, and comfort. Updating this prison’s exterior is an important part of creating a better overall experience for those who are forced into prison environments, especially for prolonged periods of time. Hopefully this garden “plants the seed” for other prisons as well!

“When you’re put in an environment where everything is concrete and steel and is designed specifically to contain and secure you, it can be a very dehumanizing experience,” one inmate said.
