We would like to introduce you to France A. Córdova, our Hispanic Heritage Month STEM Superstar of the Day. France is the director of the National Science Foundation, a federal agency that develops programs to advance all fields of scientific discovery. She was nominated for the position in 2014 by President Barack Obama. Before she spent her days overseeing America’s science and scientific education programs, Córdova conducted important research on x-ray and gamma ray sources, accretion discs, and black holes, publishing more than 150 scientific papers. Back in 1993, she also became the first woman to hold the position of NASA Chief Scientist.

We would like to introduce you to Javier Fernandez-Han, our Hispanic Heritage Month STEM Superstar of the Day. As young as he is, Javier Fernandez-Han has taken strides that not many adults can claim to. Born to Chinese and Mexican immigrants, Fernandez-Han was named among the Forbes’ 30 under 30 for his invention of using algae to break down sewage waste into methane, which can be used for fuel. But that’s not all: When he was 14, he launched an organization “Inventors without Borders”. It aims to find “innovative solutions to solve real-world problems in rural, poverty-stricken areas”.

We would like to introduce you to Gabriela Farfan, our Hispanic Heritage Month STEM Superstar of the Day. Gabriela is a mineralogist who has studied rocks since she was just a child. When Farfan was a freshman geology major, she won an Intel Science Talent Search award for her independent research describing why some gemstones appear to change color when looked at from different angles. Her findings landed her an invitation from former first lady Michelle Obama to attend the 2010 State of the Union address. That year, the White House referred to her as one of the “outstanding young leaders in the scientific community.”
This year, the Mineralogical Society of America awarded her the Edward Kraus Crystallographic Research Grant, bringing the modern, multidisciplinary mineralogist one step closer to her dream of being a working scientist and a mineral curator at a natural history museum.

We would like to introduce you to Mario Molina , our Hispanic Heritage Month STEM Superstar of the Day. Mexican-born chemist Mario Molina won a Nobel Prize in 1995 for “his research on how man-made compounds affect the ozone layer.” Biography.com says he became interested in science at a young age, creating a chemistry laboratory inside a bathroom in his home.
He moved from Mexico to the USA in 1968 to work on an advanced degree in physical chemistry from the University of California-Berkeley. He later taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of California-San Diego.
Mr. Molina received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama on November 20, 2013.

We would like to introduce you to Patricia Valoy, our Hispanic Heritage Month STEM Superstar of the Day. Patricia is a STEMinist, a feminist in the male-dominated world of STEM careers. The dominicana studied civil engineering at Columbia University, graduating in 2008, and worked as a project manager at a New York firm for almost a decade before leaving to pursue feminist diversity consulting in STEM full time this year. She often writes about the discrimination she experienced from the office to the construction site — from sexual harassment and double standards to female rivalry and gender pay gaps — on sites like Everyday Feminism and tours the nation to talk on gender bias in the industry, STEM outreach for girls and groups of color and working in male-dominated fields.
