METI International

METI International [hello, universe] Promote international cooperation and collaboration in METI, SETI, and astrobiology.

The primary objectives and purposes of METI International are to:

Conduct scientific research and educational programs in Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Understand and communicate the societal implications and relevance of searching for life beyond Earth, even before detection of extraterrestrial life. Foster multidiscip

linary research on the design and transmission of interstellar messages, building a global community of scholars from the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and arts. Research and communicate to the public the many factors that influence the origins, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe, with a special emphasis on the last three terms of the Drake Equation: (1) the fraction of life-bearing worlds on which intelligence evolves, (2) the fraction of intelligence-bearing worlds with civilizations having the capacity and motivation for interstellar communication, and (3) the longevity of such civilizations. Offer programs to the public and to the scholarly community that foster increased awareness of the challenges facing our civilization’s longevity, while encouraging individual and community activities that support the sustainability of human culture on multigenerational timescales, which is essential for long-term METI and SETI research.

"We must send Messages to Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (METIs)," says Zoe Rodriguez in the latest issue of Vassar's The Miscellany News. "It is a scientific imperative."

The Earth has ears. These instruments are aimed towards the sky with colossal reflector dishes, some up to 500m in diameter. Scattered over the globe in China, Australia, South Africa, Europe and North America, these radio telescopes hide from interfering signals, existing in remote locations. What

From surveys of the pre-Sputnik skies to analysis of interstellar visitors, scientists are rethinking how and where to look for physical traces of alien technology.

The act of even looking for life on other worlds CAN benefit our own. There’s a term to describe this, called the Panzoic effect. Read more about it here:

Fireflies in plain sight, you say? An interesting idea…

A new paper posits that advanced alien civilizations may communicate through subtle flashes, like fireflies do on Earth. The thought experiment suggests that we need to avoid human biases in our search for extraterrestrial life.

As it says in this video, perhaps we are at this moment in time acting as the “mapmakers” for finding life in the cosmos. What do you think?

Why might cloudy worlds make it easier to find life? Particularly when you might think clouds could make it more difficult…

Astronomer Lisa Kaltenegger spoke with Big Think about how "the colors of life" could leave detectable traces on distant planets.

The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) concept is currently being discussed and technologies are being developed for it. Will be interesting to monitor this further:

The observatory will combine tech from NASA's most powerful space telescopes.

Observatories could identify gases potentially associated with life in the atmospheres of other worlds.
