Pacific Atrocities Education We believe that it is essential for future generations to learn about, understand, and share with others about this devastating chapter of our world story.

Pacific Atrocities Education's mission is to increase awareness about atrocities committed in the Asia-Pacific Theater of World War II through public history projects. Through publishing books, creating educational resources, and heading archival projects on topics such as Korean comfort women, the Bataan Death March, Unit 731, and the Nanjing Massacre, PAE is devoted to helping survivors find clo

sure and reconciliation for these painful memories. Along with this, we hope to increase the dialogue about complex contemporary issues surrounding human rights worldwide. Why it is important to examine atrocities in the modern world? During the height of WWII in 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an order instructing the American media to suppress reports on the Japanese-committed atrocities in the Far East, for fear of causing public hysteria. This lack of mainstream awareness allowed the American people to be uninformed, and consequently indifferent about the heinous human rights violations affecting millions of people, thousands of miles away. This order set the precedent for much of the suffering during the war to go forgotten, still seen today with the media, memorials, and education curriculum's focus on the Western stories of World War II rather than those of the Asia-Pacific Theater. Each of these traditional structures was meticulously designed to withstand the unique environmental and social challenges of its region—from the typhoons and humidity of Southeast Asia to the harsh winters of East Asia.

🇵🇭 Philippines: The Bahay Kubo (Nipa Hut) shown here in pre-colonial style, uses lightweight, sustainable materials like bamboo and thatch to stay cool and flexible during earthquakes.

🇹🇭 Thailand: High-pitched roofs and stilt foundations allow for maximum ventilation and protection against monsoon flooding.

🇯🇵🇰🇷🇨🇳 East Asia: Heavy timber frames and sweeping ceramic tiled eaves were engineered to shed heavy rain and snow while signaling the strength of the community.

🎖️ The Hunter’s ROTC: Born in 1942 after the Japanese occupation, this unit was formed by former cadets and students. These young officers didn’t just wait for liberation—they fought for it.

📈 Exponential Growth: Starting with just 300 fighters, the Hunter’s ROTC exploded to 10,000 members in just three years. With an average annual growth rate of 221%, they more than tripled in size every single year, becoming one of the fastest-growing resistance groups in history.

The tragedy no one saw coming. ⚓️💔

In October 1944, the Arisan Maru became the site of one of the most heartbreaking “friendly fire” incidents in naval history. Nearly 1,800 American POWs were packed into the stifling, dark holds of a Japanese freighter—a ship with no markings to warn Allied forces of the precious cargo inside.

When the USS Shark fired its torpedoes, the crew believed they were striking a blow against the enemy supply line. They had no way of knowing their targets were their own brothers-in-arms.

What followed was a nightmare: as the ship sank, the Japanese crew cut the escape ladders, leaving the Americans trapped in the rising waters. Of the 1,800 men on board, only nine lived to tell the world what happened in South China Sea.

During his summer internship with us, researcher Gabriel Corro spent months meticulously piecing together the harrowing details of this “Hell Ship” to ensure these men are never forgotten.

During his summer internship at Pacific Atrocities Education, Gabriel Corro immersed himself in the harrowing archives of the Pacific War, focusing specifically on the tragic sinking of the Arisan Maru.

His research was a deep dive into the systemic brutality of the Japanese “Hell Ships.” Gabriel spent countless hours cross-referencing declassified naval reports with the rare, haunting testimonies of the nine survivors. He meticulously documented the “Hell Hold” conditions—where men were packed into cargo bays with less than two square feet of space each, enduring temperatures that soared above 100°F without adequate air or water.

By reconstructing the timeline of the ship’s final voyage, Gabriel helped illuminate the “unseen” side of the tragedy: the agonizing choice POWs faced between the suffocation of the holds and the chaos of the Bashi Channel. His work ensures that the nearly 1,800 lives lost are remembered not just as a statistic, but as a testament to human endurance under the most inhumane circumstances.

The sinking of the Arisan Maru remains one of the most tragic and harrowing chapters of World War II.

On October 24, 1944, the Japanese freighter was transporting nearly 1,800 American Prisoners of War from the Philippines when it was torpedoed and sunk by a U.S. submarine, whose crew was unaware that the unmarked ship was carrying their own countrymen.

Often referred to as a “Hell Ship” due to the inhumane, cramped, and brutal conditions the prisoners endured, the Arisan Maru sank rapidly in the Bashi Channel. Of the 1,800 men on board, only nine survived the sinking and the subsequent days at sea.

This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the immense human cost of war and the horrific experiences of those held in captivity during the Pacific campaign.
