Here are some tips for the upcoming cold weather to keep you safe.

1. Be sure all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
2. Don't use extension cords with space heaters.
3. Don't place heaters near combustible materials.
4. Be sure your heater is rated for indoor use. Many forced air and kerosene type heaters are for outdoor use only.
5. Don't use cooking appliances to heat your home. Carbon monoxide isn't the only danger. Electric appliances can overheat if used improperly.
6. Be sure chimneys are clean and flues are open before attempting to use indoor fireplaces.
7. Never burn trash indoors.
8. If you use a heat lamp to warm outdoor animal enclosures, be sure they are protected from damage by the animals. We respond to many fires caused by broken bulbs, underrated cords or frayed and chewed cords
