This week starts with another amazing announcement to make: Ida Jew Academy and Valle Vista Elementary (IJAVVE) has been labeled as a 2026 Silver Recognized School by California PBIS! This makes IJAVVE a recipient of the Silver Implementation Award, which represents their commitment to a whole child-aligned environment where everyone can thrive. Congratulations to the IJAVVE team for their work and dedication!

What is so important about PBIS? PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, an evidence-based framework that aims to create safe, positive, equitable schools through supporting students, engaging with families, and utilizing data. Throughout the past decade, more and more schools have been implementing this system and seeing promising results.

We are proud to announce that Nina Gilman-Cama, one of our teachers at August Boeger Middle, has been selected as a winner of the 2026 Dr. Harry Edwards Follow Your Bliss Award, which is hosted by the San Francisco 49ers Foundation! This award honors Bay Area educators who exemplify outstanding leadership and passion, and it provides a stipend for classroom materials and resources. Check out the Foundation's statement about Nina:

Nina believes that learning is most meaningful when students experience belonging before achievement. Inspired by her mother who is a retired professor of multicultural nursing, Nina's classroom is designed to build community through empathy, confidence, lasting relationships, and the belief that they can positively impact the world around them. Through opportunities like Law Day, College & Career Day, Nina hopes to send a message to her students: you belong, your voice matters, and your future is full of possibilities.

Thank you for a fantastic first day of school, everyone! As we wind down from today's excitement, take a look at the recent memories we made together. Students were welcomed back to the campus with smiles, and for some, it was their very first step in their journey with us. In the days leading up to those moments, staff members worked diligently to be ready for the big event.

Our maintenance team ensured that our classrooms and playgrounds were clean and safe. Our educators, student support staff, and administrators completed professional developments to sharpen their minds. Our office staff got every student in a classroom, welcomed families, and got the supplies in on time. Our MPAS team watched over them before and after classes. Most importantly, our yard duties, food service staff, and instructional aides were in the field today to protect, feed, and guide the students. No effort was spared in preparing our district for everyone.

In the name of equity and success for every member of our community, let's keep the momentum going for the 2026-27 school year! Welcome back!

In the midst of our preparations for the school year, we have a wonderful message to share from one of our Family Case Managers, Kianna Rogers, about the students' summer adventures:

As we reflect on an incredible summer, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the partnerships, creativity, and community that made this season so memorable.

This summer, the MPESD Summer Shining Stars Program had the privilege of collaborating with Maker Alley, an outstanding nonprofit dedicated to making hands-on STEAM learning accessible to everyone through its inspiring philosophy: Make. Create. Play.

Together, we transformed learning into an experience where curiosity sparked innovation, creativity came to life, and every student was encouraged to imagine, build, explore, and discover. From engineering challenges and artistic creations to collaborative problem-solving and joyful exploration, our students experienced learning in ways that nurtured confidence, belonging, and a love for discovery.

We are especially grateful for Maker Alley and their partnership in helping make the 2026 Maker Alley Festival such a tremendous success. The energy, smiles, and excitement shared throughout the day reflected what is possible when schools, families, volunteers, and community organizations come together with a shared purpose.

At MPESD, we believe learning extends beyond the classroom. Every experience is an opportunity to cultivate belonging, inspire creativity, and empower students to become compassionate leaders and future innovators. Events like these strengthen our commitment to creating spaces where every child feels seen, valued, and encouraged to reach their fullest potential.

Please enjoy the short highlight video showcasing some of the memorable moments from this year's collaboration. We hope it brings a smile to your face and reminds us of all of the incredible things that happen when a school community comes together to learn, create, and grow.

Here's to another year of innovation, belonging, and endless possibilities!
