Chennault4SLUSD Richard Chennault for better San Leandro Schools and candidate for ADEM18 I am a parent with children in school today.

Not the same old politicians peddling the same old solutions that don't apply to today's challenges.

At the Aug 31st San Leandro Unified School District school board meeting a motion was made to rename Wilson Elementary. The notes will state that the motion passed. What may not be evident is it didn't pass unanimously. Three board members effectively voted against renaming the school. Let that sit in for a moment. Three people representing San Leandro found justification for continuing to bestow an honor for a person that stated,

“Segregation is not a humiliation but a benefit, and ought to be so regarded by you gentlemen.” -- Woodrow Wilson

Three members voted to remind children, staff, parents, and teachers to remember the name, Wilson. A person who supported the Klu Klux Klan promoted segregation, and actively worked to disenfranchise people of color.

Listen to the board recordings and make a judgment for yourself. For me, they represent a status quo that just has to go.

There can be no equity when the very foundation of our educational system remains grounded in supporting people, institutions, and processes that either passively or actively endorse racism from the past, today or tomorrow.

School board recording from Aug 31st.

I have three children going to San Leandro School school today. My opponent is also a parent. These two facts do not have equivalency. My family is experiencing the challenges of distance learning today, the inequity today, and the pressures of shelter in place today. While my opponent may be a parent her experience is from over 30 years ago. Thus when you vote remember to vote for me who has relevant and fresh experience that is shared with our families today.

I'm running because "...the status quo needs fixing; that the old ways of doing things don't work". --President Obama at the HBCU commencement address 05/2020

We need change, we need to move towards a future that is not constrained by the same old politicians doing the same old thing.
Our plan is simple:
Achieve equity and unity in our education system.
Set term limits for school board members.
End wasteful spending.
Direct area elections and not district-wide voting.
Make district leadership accountable for the results.
Listen to our community, respect their input, and make real change happen.

Join us in voting for real change for our children and San Leandro school community.

The mailed an advertisement celebrating the fact that she hired the current superintendent.

A superintendent who has had a 312% TC raise since he started.

Have our teachers received a 312% TC raise from the incumbent? NO!

Has the special education budget she voted to cut received a 312% rise in funds? NO!

She made sure that the same old politics stayed the same.

She led the district to make sure that the superintendent made 1255% more than a first-year teacher!

Say NO TO STATUS QUO!

Note: used TC for calculating percentages. Edited for clarity.

It is the endorsement season for politics. Over the coming weeks, you will see lots of politicking about who has who's endorsement. Endorsements in of themselves can help get their message out and let voters know what other groups think about a candidate. They can be a good thing.

However, the endorsement process favors the incumbent for a number of reasons. This makes it incredibly hard for a new candidate because the process is not uniform, consistent, or in a few cases, equitable. There are many clubs, associations, and groups. Each with its own set of rules, processes, and schedules for candidates.

As a new candidate, I've found the process to be at times difficult and other times quite wonderful. I am grateful to have had an opportunity to share our vision for schools. I appreciate all of those who support our desire to improve our schools by supporting my candidacy.

However, I want to be very clear. I am running for families. I am running for the parents who are trying to balance providing for their family while at the same time trying to ensure their child gets a quality education. I am running for the teachers who are working overtime to learn new techniques and methods for teaching our children due to distance learning. I am running as a father of three children going to school today. I am running for you.

So when you see endorsements in this political season remember to choose a candidate that is running for you, and not for the political upside.

Prop. 15 would make businesses pay property taxes based on market value. That’s an overdue update to a creaking tax code.

Under normal circumstances, teaching is a hard job. With distance learning, I can only begin to imagine how much more difficult the job has become. After a full day of being online, I find my self physically and emotionally drained. I would like to hear from our teachers in San Leandro Unified School District. Teachers please leave a comment and let me know your experience.

I am a parent with three children going to John Muir Middle School and San Leandro High School. I would like to hear from other parents about how things are going for them and their children in San Leandro. What is going good? What needs improvement? Tips you can share for helping children stay engaged with their lessons.

Be well and thrive,
