Cherrywood Commons / Union Pacific Railroad Corridor Cleanup & Outreach

On August 18 and 19, the City of San Leandro and community partners conducted a coordinated cleanup and outreach effort along the railroad corridor between Davis Street and Alvarado Street, including Cherrywood Commons.

The effort combined compassionate outreach with work to improve health, safety, and environmental conditions. Partners included San Leandro Public Works, San Leandro Police, Union Pacific Railroad, Amtrak, Alameda County Flood Control District, Dillard Environmental Services, San Leandro Investors LLC, and the Alameda County Alternative Response Unit.

The teams removed more than 260 cubic yards of debris, an additional nine dump truck loads, approximately 25,000 pounds of debris, and two abandoned vehicles. Encampments were cleared, and debris was removed from the railroad corridor, creek area, sidewalks, landscaped areas, and surrounding public and private property.

We recognize that homelessness is complex and that everyone deserves compassion, dignity, and respect. We are grateful to the agencies, crews, and outreach professionals who worked together to create a cleaner and safer San Leandro while connecting vulnerable community members with support and services.

👋🏽🚸📚 School’s back, and so are the school zones. So tell your friends because our officers will be conducting high visibility traffic enforcement around all school zones.

A few extra seconds behind the wheel makes all the difference. Every speed limit, sign and traffic law is in place for one reason: the safety of our students, staff and community.

We thank you for doing your part in making sure every day at school is safe.

Schools in session! — and safety is our first priority.

As our students return to school, we want to make sure that both parents bringing their children to school and the students traveling to and from are safe.

These back to school safety tips are reminders for students and families:

🍎 Limit Distractions. Eyes up, phones down.
🍎 Be alert around crosswalks and bus stops.
🍎 Walk & Bike Safety: Use crosswalks and wear protective gear when biking, skating or scootering.
🍎 Plan safe routes: choose well lit paths and review traffic rules with parents.
🍎 Give yourself plenty of time to arrive to school as parents and students adjust to new routines.

Because we want to remind you that sidewalks are meant to be walked, biked, scootered and enjoyed safely by pedestrians.

Do NOT block or park on sidewalks as it will result in an unfortunate visit from us.

🚨Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Sweep:

This past Thursday, Police Service Technicians (PST), Traffic Unit and coordination with Jack James and San Leandro Tow we conducted systematic inspections primarily on the West side of town.

This operation was our departments response to on going citizens complaints of these abandoned vehicles on public streets throughout the city.

During the operation 32 vehicles were towed.

While this work is part of our daily duties, we will continue to perform more extensive sweeps throughout the city to combat our citizens concerns and maintain community safety.

Thank you to our residents for reporting concerns and helping us keep San Leandro’s neighborhoods safe and accessible.
