Food is love made visible! A huge thank you to our wonderful Dinner Donors, like Ms. Lew, who prepare and deliver meals for the women and children staying in Building Futures’ shelters. Your generosity brings comfort, care, and a home-cooked meal to the table.

Ms. Lew cooked 45 pieces of baked chicken legs, 3 half-pans of macaroni & cheese, tossed green salad, egg salad, Korean broccoli salad, watermelon, chocolate zucchini cake, mango juice, and even brought milk and blueberry muffins for breakfast tomorrow!

We still need Dinner Donors! Gather your family, friends, coworkers, faith group, or community group and provide a meal for the 25 women and children who reside in each of the family shelters in Alameda and San Leandro. www.bfwc.org/volunteer

Food is love made visible. Neighbors helping neighbors. Thank you to to Garry Offenberg & Teri Schlesinger.

Garry grilled smash burgers and hot dogs for the kiddos and adults at the Safe house yesterday! Garry loves to cook. Every summer, Garry provides a full meal for the residents at the Sister Me Home domestic violence Safe House.

At the Safe house, we provide confidential shelter and support services in an environment of safety, empowerment, and healing. The shelter provides 20 beds with 24-hour staffing and culturally appropriate support services. Sister Me Home is open to all fleeing domestic violence.

Leave a legacy.

Did you know that only a quarter of adults have a will?

Many simply don’t know how to start. The fact is, if you do nothing, your estate will go into probate at the end of your life. This means the state will decide. Protect your loved ones and avoid confusion with a will. Many also choose to include a gift to benefit causes they care about.

A bequest to Building Futures is a powerful way to express your values and help those in need!

It’s August—Make-A-Will Month! Visit us at https://bfwc.org/give-support/planned-giving/ to learn more.

Woot Woot! You remember walking into school with a new pair of shoes?

Thanks to our community of donors, 40 students were served. Every school-aged child served by the Midway, San Leandro, and Sister Me Home shelters as well as Bessie Coleman Court is back to school with something new. Shoes. Pants. Backpack.

Together, we helped 40 amazing kids at Building Futures shelters—from kindergarten through 12th grade—start the school year feeling more prepared, seen, and supported with a gift card of $100.

These gifts did more than get kids ready for the first day of school. They reminded children—and their moms and families—that their community is behind them. Thank you, generous community!

Let's Plan! Haven’t Gotten Around to Making a Will? With a will, you can provide clarity and reduce stress for your loved ones. You can also extend your legacy.

The sad fact is that, if you do nothing, your estate will go into probate at the end of your life. This means the state will decide.

A gift in your will to Building Futures provides long-term support to fresh starts for families and individuals right here in our community. It’s Make-A-Will Month—a great time to get started if you haven’t yet gotten to it.

Your Legacy, Their Future

August is Make-A-Will Month! Many think they “aren’t rich enough” to need a will. In fact, if you don’t make a will, it could result in a lot of extra work and lost money for those you care about. Creating a will prevents family conflict, eliminates confusion, and ensures your assets go where you wish.

You can also use your will to help ensure that help is there for families and individuals building better futures after homelessness and domestic violence. If you choose to include Building Futures in your will, your legacy of caring will endure far beyond your lifetime.

Help us raise the last $1,100! Kids make up 52% of our shelters. And right now, the Alameda Midway Shelter, the San Leandro Shelter, and our Domestic Violence Safe House are completely full.

That means we have more kids than ever in need of your support for back-to-school clothes and supplies.

We want to ensure the children and youth are well equipped and feeling confident all year long! We need your help to set kids up for success in this new school year!

How can you help? We’ve set up an online “shopping list” to raise money for much-needed items to set up the children for success—you can add multiple “items” when you donate.

They already have their backpacks, so new shoes and new clothing are at the top of the list! Gift cards are great and give mothers the ability to respond to the child’s most immediate needs.

Neighbors in full effect! The community came out today and supported the Midway Shelter!
Because now more than ever, we come together to be in community.

1,796 registered runners!

The 2026 Alameda 4th of July 5K RACE was a success, with a portion of each runner registration going to help fund every day expenses for Midway 24/7/365!
The shelter provides 25 beds for women and children without homes. The Alameda Homeless Network (midwayshelter.org) raises funds to keep the shelter going strong, all year long. Building Futures operates the shelter, providing beds, food, case management, and much more. Community support brings new beginnings to women and children in Alameda!
