🌺The California Abundant Birth Project (CA ABP) is a guaranteed income program that provides cash during pregnancy. It was developed by Expecting Justice and the community to make birthing healthier and safer for the people facing the greatest risk during their pregnancy journey.

👉CA ABP provides cash with no strings attached as a strategy to prevent stress during pregnancy. Research shows this is likely to prevent babies from being born too early or too small and can also protect the health of the mother (birthing parent). By providing unconditional cash, mamas have resources to support themselves and their families, and babies have the chance at a healthy start.

👉California Abundant Birth Project will provide monthly unconditional income supplements to 950 pregnant individuals at highest risk of perinatal health inequities starting in the 1st or 2nd trimester for 12-18 months starting in January 2024.

👉If selected participants will receive the following monthly cash gift, based on county of residence: Alameda: $967

👉For more information to see program eligibility, or to apply go to www.AbundantBirthProject.org

❤️FATHER'S MENTAL HEALTH
👉Father involvement, has significant benefits for everyone involved. But too often, social expectations about masculinity and structural barriers make it difficult for fathers to get involved, especially during the early years of life.
👉Trying to navigate these barriers can generate internal stress. This stress can then manifest in mental health issues and make it all the more difficult for dads to engage in nurturing, interactive relationships with their children.
👉We need to do more to support fathers’ mental health.

📢TRUTH & EQUITY THURSDAY
👉In medical school, students learning about illness, pathology, and disease are trained almost exclusively on images of white patients.
👉Even materials on illnesses that predominantly affect Black people, like sickle cell disease, and textbooks used in medical schools in countries where most people are Black, are filled with illustrations of white bodies and white skin. This leaves doctors underprepared to care for Black patients.

👉For Nigerian medical student and illustrator Chidiebere Ibe, accurate representation is a starting point for health care equity. Ibe has founded Illustrate Change, the world's largest open-source digital library of medical illustrations featuring people of color.

👉In this episode of The Dose podcast, host Joel Bervell talks to Ibe about his efforts to make inclusive imagery widely accessible — a critical step toward building health systems that can provide Black patients with the care they deserve.

Hello Community!
We are excited to announce our upcoming Spring ACPHD Doula Benefit Medi-Cal Forum! This marks our second forum, following one held last year in October.
We encourage any doulas interested in becoming a Medi-Cal provider or any BIPOC-expecting parents, and community members seeking more information on accessing a doula during pregnancy and postpartum to attend. We are thrilled to have five community-based doula organizations as our panelists, as well as representatives from managed care plans Alameda Alliance for Health & Kaiser Permanente, who will provide a brief community update on the contracting process and their plans for supporting doulas and community members.
The forum will be held on May 10th, from 12 pm to 2 pm on Zoom. We'd love for you to join us and mark your calendar for this event. Please feel free to share this invite with others in your network.
