📢TRUTH & EQUITY THURSDAY
👉In medical school, students learning about illness, pathology, and disease are trained almost exclusively on images of white patients.
👉Even materials on illnesses that predominantly affect Black people, like sickle cell disease, and textbooks used in medical schools in countries where most people are Black, are filled with illustrations of white bodies and white skin. This leaves doctors underprepared to care for Black patients.

👉For Nigerian medical student and illustrator Chidiebere Ibe, accurate representation is a starting point for health care equity. Ibe has founded Illustrate Change, the world's largest open-source digital library of medical illustrations featuring people of color.

👉In this episode of The Dose podcast, host Joel Bervell talks to Ibe about his efforts to make inclusive imagery widely accessible — a critical step toward building health systems that can provide Black patients with the care they deserve.

📢PLEASE SHARE
🌺The California Abundant Birth Project (CA ABP) is a guaranteed income program that provides cash during pregnancy. It was developed by Expecting Justice and the community to make birthing healthier and safer for the people facing the greatest risk during their pregnancy journey.

👉CA ABP provides cash with no strings attached as a strategy to prevent stress during pregnancy. Research shows this is likely to prevent babies from being born too early or too small and can also protect the health of the mother (birthing parent). By providing unconditional cash, mamas have resources to support themselves and their families, and babies have the chance at a healthy start.

👉California Abundant Birth Project will provide monthly unconditional income supplements to 950 pregnant individuals at highest risk of perinatal health inequities starting in the 1st or 2nd trimester for 12-18 months starting in January 2024.

👉If selected participants will receive the following monthly cash gift, based on county of residence: Alameda: $967

👉For more information to see program eligibility, or to apply go to www.AbundantBirthProject.org

Hello Community!
We are excited to announce our upcoming Spring ACPHD Doula Benefit Medi-Cal Forum! This marks our second forum, following one held last year in October.
We encourage any doulas interested in becoming a Medi-Cal provider or any BIPOC-expecting parents, and community members seeking more information on accessing a doula during pregnancy and postpartum to attend. We are thrilled to have five community-based doula organizations as our panelists, as well as representatives from managed care plans Alameda Alliance for Health & Kaiser Permanente, who will provide a brief community update on the contracting process and their plans for supporting doulas and community members.
The forum will be held on May 10th, from 12 pm to 2 pm on Zoom. We'd love for you to join us and mark your calendar for this event. Please feel free to share this invite with others in your network.

❤️MATERNAL HEALTH MONDAY
Maternal Mental Health
👉Your pregnant or recently pregnant friend or family member is going through many changes.
👉Changes are normal but some could be warning signs for complications or more serious problems.
👉It may be physical, but also includes feelings of sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that make it difficult to complete daily care activities for herself, her baby or others.
👉It’s important to really Hear Her concerns when she expresses them to you and encourage her to seek help, if needed.
👉Serious pregnancy-related complications and deaths can occur, but many can be prevented if we recognize the warning signs and encourage women to get help early.

❤️MATERNAL HEALTH MONDAY
Breastfeeding Benefits
Breastfeeding gives babies a healthy start in life. But it’s not just good for babies—it’s good for moms, too.
👉HEALTH BENEFITS: Breastfeeding gives babies a healthy start in life. But it’s not just good for babies—it’s good for moms, too.
Research suggests that breastfeeding lowers your baby's risk of certain infections and diseases.
👉BONDING: Physical contact is very important for your baby. It helps your baby feel safe, warm, secure, and loved. The skin-to-skin contact from breastfeeding also boosts your levels of oxytocin, a hormone that helps breast milk flow and helps you feel calm.
👉NUTRIENTS: Breast milk is one of the best things that your baby needs to grow and develop. It even changes to meet your baby's needs as he or she gets older. Breast milk is rich in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients as well as other ingredients that help your baby grow healthy and strong.
👉DIGESTION: Babies can easily digest breast milk. And colostrum, the thick milk moms make during pregnancy and just after birth, helps your baby's digestive system grow.
👉COST: Breast milk is free. Breastfed babies may also be sick less often, which may keep your health costs low.
👉CONVENIENCE: With breastfeeding, the milk is warm and ready to go whenever your baby is hungry. That means no bottles to heat up and no formula to measure and mix, which saves time.
❤️For moms, breastfeeding can help you recover more quickly from childbirth. It can also reduce your risk for high blood pressure, certain breast and ovarian cancer and type 2 diabetes. Breastfeeding may also help you lose weight after childbirth.
